Folks

Does anyone know how much is interchangeable between the BW 60 and 68 series diffs are for the 1200?

I have a complete 60 series and a 68 series diff/housing. The 68 series has a welded diff and the 60 series isn't.
I want to use the 68 series housing but without a welded diff.

Can I put the 60 series diff centre and spider gears into the 68 series housing and it fit without headache?

Before anyone asks why bother blah blah blah. Its a long story,(that involves much frustration, money and my beloved Daisy) but I need to fit some skyline brakes to a 68 series housing with an open centre to bolt into a 1200.

Thanks in advance folks

That is certainly an option, but I have only a few weeks to make this all happen else the deal may fall through. Strike while the iron is hot and all that.

The main issue for me right now is cost. If I can get my hands on a 68 series diff centre for nix, then that's the ideal solution, but getting stuff for free when time is also an issue can be problematic.
But, if I have to buy to get the deal through, then that's what ill do, just not the ideal solution.

With that in mind, does anyone in the Perth region (within 250km) have a BW 68 for free that needs a home. Can swap a locked one for it!

Borg Warner 60 Series housing (At least I think so)

Borg Warner 68 series housing (At least I think)

Can anyone confirm/deny my assumptions?

Both are 8 bolt in a hexagonal shape, but the image on the top (60 series) is smaller and the housing is wider than it is taller (kinda squashed).

Both have the same handbrake setup, but slightly different leaf mounts.

I very much doubt it. The Corolla BW68 centers are not even compatible with the 120Y BW68 diffs without a fair bit of work. And they're basically the same diff.

The BW60 has a 6" crownwheel, the BW 68 has a 6.8" crownwheel. Unless the BW60 pinion's shaft is about 0.4" longer from the crush tube to the pinion gear there is no way the crownwheel will line up with the pinion. It's also unlikely that the smaller BW60 center is the same width as the BW68 and fits in the housing.

Measure the width of the backing plates and the distance from the backing plate to the front of the diff - if they're not identical, you've got no hope. If they are identical, it's stil going to be a long-shot.

Thanks for the advice folks

After taking them apart, It seems that nothing will fit easily enough to be worth the misery.

On the plus side, I have found another BW68 with an open centre, so ill swap around parts to make something up.

But next question...

Looking at the bearings on the axles, it seems that Ill have to cut them off.
I was hoping to press them off and then back on.

If I do have to cut them off, Ill have to get some new ones, but what do I ask for?
Auto shops these days struggle unless you have a VIN number let alone asking for wheel bearings for a 68 series borg warner.

Am I correct that the BW comes from a Aussie assembled 4 door sedan 120y?

What years and how do I tell the parts guy that a 120Y from the same year comes with two diffs and I don't want the ones that the rest of the range came with(Hitachi)

Don't tell the parts guy anything. Ask for the bearing by number which is stamped on the bearing. If you buy from bearing supply company it will be half the price of an auto spares company.

I've just cut off the bearings (as I don't have a press big enough to fit the axle in)

I've found a part number on the bearing, but what about the retainer plate? (The ring that is spline side that holds it all in place)

Is this a Datsun specific part or a generic ring that a bearing place will have

The retainer ring will be Nissan PTY Australia. Measure the axle shaft diameter and get a retainer for that size. The Nissan Japan axles are 30mm (1967-1972) or 32mm (1973-1982).

What number is the bearing? Nissan Japan axles use bearing type 114 (72mm) or type 115 (62mm).
