I didn't realise till I took the rings out of the box that the compartments were labelled with which ring goes where.

Could someone please tell me if the bevelled ring is the top or second ring?

Thanks

It depends on the brand...

* Rings having a "pip" mark or dot on the side of the ring must always be installed with the "pip" mark or dot towards the top of the piston.

* Rings with a bevel on the inside diameter must be installed with the bevel towards the top of the piston, regardless of the outside bevel

* Rings with a groove in the outside diameter and no "pip" mark or dot must be installed with the groove toward the bottom of the piston.

Thanks. They are Hastings rings and I know that the dot faces upwards I'm just not certain of the order they go in. I'll call Hastings tomorrow and hopefully they can tell me. The thought of assembling them the wrong way is painful enough.

Good idea. My dad did that back in the day, and had to re-ring the engine twice.
