Up-rating a stock engine

Hey fella's, I am prepping an old Datsun 310 for a local chump car race, and would like some input.
I am thinking of milling the head for a compression boost and possibly changing the cam timing a few degrees.
How far can I mill the head before I have problems with the rocker geometry and piston clearance. Suggestions on cam timing? what do you use for push rods if they need to be shorter.
I will clean and match ports, and freshen the bottom end while it is down..
Any ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mongo

If its an old Datsun 310 with 1200 engine, it can be shaved 0.030 inch, use the stock push rods.

If its a Datsun 310 with SOHC engine, it can be milled 0.060 and it wont have pushrods.

Or if its a 310 with OHV engine it can be shaved 0.080". Use custom push rod ends on Chevy pushrods cut to Length. You can gain a solid 2 HP from this work. Unless its a 5-speed car, in which case only 1 hp.

Note that you on an A-series that there are different thickness head gaskets which will raise the compression about a point or so. Delta cams in Tacoma Washington will regrind a cam for $75 and they are quite familiar with A-series.

Yes, click the pushrod link in the prior reply and contact any of the push rod companies listed

Yes piston to valve clearance is always a concern so measure it.

Makes a good race car, super reliable and if it rains you got the FWD advantage.

Got another question. Will a E-series flywheel bolt up to a a-series engine?
I am wondering if the later FWD trany can be used in a 1980 310.

Thanks for info fella's

Good question.

I would ask at http://forum.pulsar.org.au, the FWD specialists. Ask about the N10 model series which is what a 1979-1982 310 is.
