On Sunday afternoon my car wouldn't start and with some digging found out it wasn't getting any spark to the spark plugs , after changing the coil, rotor button and distributer cap still nothing. Will be changing the points tomorrow and giving it another go but I'm desperate for help as its my only means on transport any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can test it, to find out what is wrong -- before you buy any parts.
The way to test spark from the coil: * Remove coil lead from distributor cap. Place it next to a bolt on the strut top, about 1/4" from the metal bolt * Remove distributor cap * Turn KEY ON (but do not attempt to start) * place a screwdriver between the points * gently move the points open Once open a spark should occur between the lead and the bolt. This indicates the coil is working
If it doesn't spark, use the screwdriver tip - not between the points - but between the two arms of the points (bypassing the actual points). If it sparks when you remove the screwdriver, the points are shot. Fit new points.
If it still doesn't spark, examine the wires inside the distributor. If the wire is loose, tighten it. If it's frayed, repair it.

Found the problem and sorted it out, turns out there is a break in the negative/earth side of the coil cause it to cut in and out of power which explains why the coil had spark sometimes then nothing.
