Since my and many dattos are sub 700-800kg Ive wondered if a harley box rathed for 200+hp and even some over 300hp if a 300kg extra would cause issues for these boxes if only making 170hp.
Some fatboys & other harley cruisers can be 630 and more fully loaded so not far a lean datto.

Box choices are drying up so I have thought why not just go sequential and enjoy 80-160hp datsuns to their fullest then if you bust one they are 500-600 to replace.

If someone can do the billet bits required this would be a much love conversion but needs bellhousing adaptor maybe using an auto bellhousing like some have done for the T50 conversion which is usually a Dell setup alternative.

The input shaft on the Baker can be machined to remove the thread and leave just
the spline and the belt drive can be unbolted and use a bolt on flange to suit
a H165 tailshaft or similar to the chosen differential.

RSD are only sub 500-800usd

chopped up 56a for extra ratios :)
just use 4th for direct and reverse
with a ferrari like shift guide plate
to block going into 1,2 and 3.

Wow.... thats doing stuff the hard way...

Nothing about this is easy
Best to look at torque rather than hp when specifing gearboxes.. and an extra 300kg out of 800 is 37.5%... thats massive in design terms

Please dont get offended and rhetoric with personal attacks which are incorrect like last time. Im just trying to give you some engineering logic

D I have beat this up quite heavily with my machinist pal; if like him I had the ability to machine parts it could indeed be a budget set up. There are few ways to do this as mentioned. You could use the bike box and a Quaife reverser box. That would be about $2000 for parts. You could use the Datsun bell housing and input shaft to drive the bike box then use the Datsun center plate and tailshaft housing on the output side. That could be as little as $750 in parts.
The maching bill would, even at super discount rates, be an easy $2000 and more likely $4000. At the end of the day we'd have a box that could cost $6000, which brings us to the point where you could buy one outright.
It's a fantastic idea but sadly I don't machine, I wished like many bikes and cars we had an off the shelf option that didn't cost as much as my car.

Tom

Some good points Tom, I really like the quaife reverse but there are cheaper options no
I guessed its only for the cluey with a lathe or right equipment but once sorted
doing more of them or replacing a harley box is cheaper and end of the day sequential.

Some $aving by using a permanent magnet starter motor which are stated as good for most
under 2litres engines, strong planetray gears and can be wired to do the job albeit durability.
Wont be as good but at least its cheap and doesnt add extra weight. Planetary gears are strong.

Im interested to hear why your keen on sequential?

I love using the clutch on downshifts to control the car. But they probably comes from use in rally more than anything

To me the clutch is way too much fun to go to sequential 😛

I suppose its a matter of what you like but I drove a locost with a zx12r and its a blast.

The simplicity of the shifts and response is just something that stimulates the experience.

I dont expect an A series to rev like a bike but they can come close
