Times have changed since I bought new front strut shock-cartridges direct from Nissan in 2006. Today, local Nissan dealers outside of Japan or South Africa do not sell them.

Today, shocks are generally available from:
* Monroe Australia, part number 25-3418 Gas shock inserts.
* USA from
Classic Garage Monroe
*
Bprojects: Nissan 56105-H5025 CARTRIDGE-ABSORBER,SHOCK, FRONT
For maximum comfort - smooth and well-controlled ride - the Nissan ones are recommended. However if you have heavy suspension, including large rims, large vented disk brakes, etc. the gas charged might be better. And of course gas-charged shocks are recommended for off-road (bouncy) use.
These front inserts fit all 1200 & 120Y struts
* 1970-1973 B110
* 1974-1979 120Y
* 1971-1994 B120 ute/truck
Of course all the usual one-off sellers still apply: eBay, Web search, etc. You might find a set there at a discount price.
Some news is alternative inserts:
* 1981-1983 Mazda 626 part is very close to 1200
* 1979-1987 Corolla is fairly close
* 1981-1983 Pulsar N10 is short, can be used with lowered 1200s
All three are available in Australia from Monroe, but unfortunately not from Monroe USA. In USA, Pulsar units are available from RockAuto.com. They are about 3" shorter than stock but with full travel. Can be used in a stock 1200 struts with a spacer.
In the past, many with lowered 1200s have chosen 1974-1984 VW Golf/Jetta inserts. There are many brands and valvings available (street, race, etc). The downside is that they use an extra-large diameter strut rod and so are reportedly difficult to fit. The Pulsar unit solves that problem.
There have been reports that 1978-1993 GM Commodore inserts will fit the 1200, and it may be true depending on the brand. However the Monroe inserts for Commodore are much too big in diameter to even fit in the 1200's 45mm strut housing.
