Hey Guys,

I bought a new laptop just over 11 months ago(Toshiba brand) and I looks like its on its way out already. This is the second Toshiba that has done this.So it looks like ill be in the market for another in the not to distant future. Its still under warranty but was bought from dick smith so that's out of the question as everybody knows that they have shut.So I wont be buying another Toshiba, was thinking of splashing out the money for a mac. What other brands would u guys recommend?

Mac is over priced. Where I work only buys Toshiba and my current laptop is approaching 5 years old with no issues. I can't say that Toshiba is the best but it has been ok for me, my previous IBM/Lenovo was pretty good as well. Bearing in mind I use these for work purposes and not gaming...
Your warranty is still valid so contact Toshiba directly.

1200ute is right, Mac's aren't cheap but they sure are convenient in terms of using them with an iPhone etc if you use them. The oply other thing with the Mac's is that you always need different software even for basics like word/excel etc. Finally getting on a Mac after being on a non-Mac will be a bit of a learning curve. After all of that my Mac has been awesome, I dont use it for gaming or anything like that but has been faultless.

The manufacturer has to honour the warranty regardless of if the retailer has gone broke. Contact them directly and if they're anything like Acer follow up regularly and expect to wait ages while it's repaired. No experience with Toshiba myself.

I'm pretty happy with the Metabox I bought last year, no issues so far and put together in Perth, except for making the mistake of putting Windows 10 on it. Chrome does not work on it any more, who knows why? Kind of wish I'd gone for a Linux based operating system now I've learned how easy Raspberry Pi's are to work with.

Work uses professional Dell, seems to go forever, the 4k box I use is great! I bought a cheap Dell when I was at Uni, lasted 15 months before the motherboard died. Was not worth fixing. Then I had an Acer, their customer support/ warranty handling wasn't great when the Cinepad went on it at 2+ years, waited 5-6 weeks to get it back.

windows 10 upgrades cause probs and is a useless time wasting OS
Ive taught graphic design and video editing on silicon graphics,
apple, mac and windows (even amiga) and use solely linux mint today

try installing Mint on your toshiba and run an SSD HDD if it gets
fixed under warranty and returns

I run this unit the mini mint on a 24 inch display, never any probs

Agree with D. Have been using Linux OS for over 10 years. Brings life back to older machines and works great. Requires very little RAM to work sufficiently. I have 4GB of RAM on a 2008 Dell Inspiron laptop and does everything I need it to do. Using Linux Mint 17.1 and includes spreadsheet and word processing software all free. I am not a gamer and dont know how Linux supports the gaming community. Once you get familiar with Linux and how to install and use it, you wont go back.

Linux is too expensive. I love my HP, only $199, battery last 10 hours, and came with Windows 8.1. I got the Signature Edition so it's not loaded up with "free" HP apps that makes it run slow

datsunbeginner, you can make it run fast again by uninstalling all the software you've installed that runs in the background. #1 slowdown is antivirus software, but there are some that don't slow your computer

linux OS is free and includes spreadsheet and wordprocessing package. No need for antivirus software. Linux doesn't get computer bugs.......Get a basic machine with 4GB ram and install the software. Linux community also has great forum for support.
