Hi guys, I've got a ute with stanza struts with coilover conversion. I'm running the r31 spare wheel as rims and 185/55's. The thing is with this setup my tyre is about 5mm away from the coilover spring. So I've decided to put on these spacers, the original studs are too long and hit the back of the rim so obviously I can't put them on. Has anyone else had this problem and did u just cut the original studs or replace them with shorter ones?

This is how close the tyre is to the strut.

I would cut the studs

In the last discussion we reckoned that 5mm is enough clearance?

I had the same problem so I decided to mount the strut tops on top of the tower using a machined top plate to clear the ridge and a bottom plate to reinforce/support on the under side.
This dropped the car about 30mm so I could lift the coilover adjustment up to clear the tyre without spacers
( allowing the tyre full clearance up into the wheel arch without scraping )
LOW IS GOOD

Nick (Suppafatto) actually suggested to just take out the helper spring and that should bring it all up and should allow for enough clearance

Yes - but 'I think' i'm correct in saying the helper springs are there to stop the spring from becoming "uncaptive" under full droop and could move off their locators, could be wrong .

If you do take them out , jack the front of the car so the front wheels are off the ground and see if the springs are loose?

Yeah they are loose and it sits quite high still. No engine in yet so hard to tell. Do you have the specs of the plates that you made inside and out?

In regards to them being "uncaptive" doesn't it depend on how much you wind or unwind the spring. I can have mine all the way down with the helper springs in and they are uncaptive.

No I dont have specs - just made them to suit.
The top ring is 1mm thicker than the height of the lip on the top of the strut tower
(I think about 8mm) with a chamfer on the inside to suit the radius of the lip
The bottom ring under the trut tower I made about 6mm ( diameter to suit , holes to suit )
Sorry I had no need for a drawing

The adjustment rings below the spring should only be wound down ( can only be done with the
car jacked up and most of the pressure off the spring ) until just before the spring becomes loose ,
this is the lowest you can go without the springs becoming uncaptive on full droop
If you want to go lower without this downside you could
1) possibly get longer helper springs ???
2) reset the position of the strut top mount ( as above )
3) fit shorter strut inserts ( shorter on extension )
4) Ask the brains trut here :)
