Hi guys,
Need some help here. So I was going to do a tappet adjustment, done this before but I have come into a problem that Im not sure what my tdc is set to. I had my engine timing and carbs tuned a while back and I forgot to write down what they had adjusted it to. Any tips to find out?
Also i have noticed I dont have any more adjustment on one of the one of cylinder 1(or not enough to allow me to put the lock nut back on) I checked the pushrods and they all seem fine and the same length, so whats going on?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Ah, tdc has caused much grief

you have an early L-B122 (pre-facelift) as I recall. Japan market used points distributor until the 1989 R-B122. The engine bay aluminium plate should specify the model

* To adjust the valves, the ignition timing setting is unimportant. Just rotate the engine until marker is at 0. Then one you remove the rocker cover, start with the pair of valves that are loose (either #1 cylinder or #4 cylinder). See Valve adjustment

* To check what your ignition timing is set to, rotate the engine by hand to the TDC mark, then remove the distributor cap and rotate the engine anti-clockwise until the points close, then forward again until they just start to open. The pulley pointer will show the degrees. For photos and details, see Initial Timing. 7 degrees BTDC is the factory setting

Hey ddgonzal, thanks for the info.Good memory, yeh its a l-b122. but whoever had it in japan before me has given it an electronic ignition. In regards to setting the valves. cylinder 1 and 4 i cant adjust anymore without not being able to put the locking nut back on. the pushrods seemed fine though?!?

thanks

the other things are
valve too short
valve seat receded
Or something weird like a previous owner put the wrong valves in

Is it both valves for cylinder #1?

If it's only on valve, compare to the other. The two rockers should be at the same angles

Is it like the first valve in the photos (no threads left) or the third one (about 3mm of threads left). How loose is the existing setting? Has it been noisy for a while but was quiet when you first got it?

Lower than the first one, an prob has at least .5 space cold
The rest are pretty good. It just seems to have worn down a lot compared to the others. i havent managed to take the head off but I suspect theres an uprated cam in it also....

At .5 mm I'd think it's making a lot of noise. But if not, if it's quiet, I'd just leave it alone. With an uprated cam it may require more valve lash then stock

When I went from the GX cam (.331 lift) to a cam with .460 lift I ended up having to get longer push rods some on the order of 4-5mm longer. I had the exact same issue you are experiencing where I had to run the adjusters almost all the way in.
