Rear Leaf Spring Caster Wedges - what's the go?

I see caster wedges for rear leaf springs advertised sometimes, usually for 4x4s, but I see kits advised for RWD Datsuns too. Can anyone explain rear wheel caster to me?

Well when your rear wheels steer, caster helps it return to center naturally. The more caster, the more it will track straighter

Interesting. I get the general idea of caster, but at first glance I can't quite get my head around the geometry of how a wedge could affect caster, but it kind of makes sense as the axle is travelling in an arc due to the shackles. Anyone running wedges like these?

With jeeps and other 4WD with front leaf sprung axle, wegdes are used to adjust steering caster

The same wedges (caster wedges) can be used in the rear to adjust pinion angle. It does not adjust rear caster. The first diagram above shows them tilting the diff up a bit. That is only done for very hi-lift, off-road vehicles. Normally the diff angle should match the transmission angle

Those can be used to correct the angle when the leaves are raised unevely. For example by using really long shackles

If you use lowering blocks or reset springs it won't require a wedge

If you raise the vehicle 5" then the railshaft angle might exceed the u-joint design. In which case if might be better to angle the pinion up -- causing a little vibration -- rather than total failure of the joint
