5 speed manual hard to find in the US. Are there other 5 speeds that would work with out a lot of trouble? Any Toyota ones having same bolt pattern to the engine? I am guessing a drive shaft would have to be modified.

The 60 series 5 speeds come up for sale a couple of times a year. They just won't be cheap.

check eBay every day for the next six months

The ones that bolt to a Datsun 1200 are
* 1979 Datsun 210 5-speed (dogleg shift pattern)
* 1980-1982 Datsun 210 5-speed (standard shift pattern)

In addition, using a different driveshaft:
* 1976-1978 Datsun B210 5-speed

The Toyota T50 is a bolt-in also when using the Dellow Engineering front bellhousing. Also requires custom driveshaft

If you can find a good old-fashioned machinist, they can turn your 4-speed into a Nissan 6-speed that bolts to the 1200 engine. Nissan sells brand new 350Z 6-speeds for $1700-$2000

ddgonzal - would you happen to know anyone who has done this? Not having seen one of these boxes in the flesh, I'd be curious as to how it all goes as far as things like the clutch fork linkage goes and generally the length of the box and shifter location.

Are you asking about the 6-speed? The only one I know of is this one-- he used the S15 version of the Aisan AZ6

* Nissan FS6R92A
* only 16kg heavier than a standard 1200 4spd
* Close ratio 1-5, with overdrive 6th

Infiniti & 350Z also use the Aisan AZ6 gearbox. Here is a Dellow conversion of the AZ6 (Lexus version) with a T50 bellhousing

This looks like a longer tailshaft and shifter extension than the Nissan version. Dimensions are in the link
