Ten or so years ago, I competed in a modified saloon class here in lil ol NZ. I built a 1200 coupe, with a 1300 pushrod in it.
The class is still going strong, and I thought I'd drag the ol 240RS up to the Taupo circuit over easter for a bit of a skid to make up the numbers.
Pumped up the tyres, threw some ballast in and spent a day buggering around trying to make a tarmac rally car resemble something pleasant to drive on a circuit.
Well, 10 years ago I stuck the 1200 on pole with a 44.0 second lap....
And what was the best time I could get outa the 240?????
45.9..... yep, granted the 1200 was a purpose built circuit car (and a good one) but bloody hell... The 1200, with the trailer, cost less than the damn long engine in the 240...and thats not the good engine either...The little 2 litre donk makes almost twice the power the 1200 did....
The stupid thing is now in a thousand bits, getting an engine setback, coilover rear and a bloody enormous set of slicks. Praps if I spend another $3k, it'll be as quick as my old 1200....
Another lesson learned....offers accepted...will swap for 1200...har de har....
