hey guys heres a question for any paint guru's out there, I am painting the coupe soon, and I'm wondering if there is an undercoat that ca go over 2pak so I can use acrylic paint?? Why you ask, to halve the cost of paint, plus 2pak means more stuffing around. It's aready a blue, it's going to a dark blue, any tips on making the most of the undercoat??
Cheers

I think you'll find there exists a coat of some kind of paint that seals the rubbish underneath. It's good for jobs where all kinds of bog and strange repairs are underneath. It's used for jobs where quality isn't ultra important. Crash repairers probably use it a lot on older cars. 2pack would mean longer durability and resistance against stone chips. But acrylic can be kept in good shape if you keep waxing it, and polish it regularly.

As for painting over the top of 2pak..I don't like your chances..it sounds like you and an orbital sander are about to become very close friends.

Just a word of warniing guys...most people are now aware of the dangers of spraying 2 pack paints but the components which are lethal, the isocynanates are still dangerous in the sanding dust of an old paint job. I know first hand the dangers of this bloody awful stuff. Back in the 80s I was 19 and nearly died when 1 of my lungs collapsed as a result of working with 2 pack paints. My lungs were blistered and holed. As a result I now have only one lung. My advice is to leave any work with 2 pack systems to the pros, they should be trained in dealing responsibily with this crap...

While we're on paint, I've just got some brand new panels....they're painted black.

Does any one know how to prep them?

Do i just sand them back a bit then under coat them?

cheers

Hey 1200 nismo to prep them leave the black paint on, as it's painted in the factory to seal the panels from water/rust etc. If the panels are brand new make sure they are clean them give them a coat of under coat.
Thanks for your advice stirling mac, I will make sure I'm careful, i got quoted $490 just for friggin paint, if I was to do it in 2pak. Then I gotta prep the car, mask it all up nd hit it with a coat of underoat then get teh painters to paint on the 2pak basecoat and clear, which is another couple of hundred, where as if I get an undercoat to seal up the 2pak I can go acrylic paint which is cheaper still looks good and my dad we be able to paint it. Being the spray painter he is. Cuz home 2pak jobs are hard, as we don't have baking ovens for the 2pak hence dust could settle on the paint while it cures.

So if I go acrylic and save money then thats more money to spend on the CA conversion, the exhaust is gonna take a huge bite outta my ass, oh well it all be worth it. I'll post up pics when it's painted and such
cheers
