Hi again, I just read an article in this months Fast Fours mag on Drew McConvilles datto 1200 ute. It has 17" simmons wheels with 205/40/17 tires on the front. In the article it says he used datsun sunny front struts. The front gaurd lip must have been rolled but the wheel-arch isn't flared! I was wondering if the sunny struts bolt strait in without mods ? How is the sunny strut different to a 1200 strut ?
Thanks for any help, DattoDoctor

Hey again Datto Doctor.
This answer will anser half your question. Fitting big wheels comes down to 3 things. The Rims's offset and the width of the rims and the prfile of the tyre. You could fit a 20"rim with 35 profile tyres if the width of the rim was 4" With out any mods.
Offset plays a huge role. I use FWD offset rims, they sit in more but if your rim is too big (17") the tyre will tend to hit the front spring perch, RWD offset wheels sit out more, meaning with the aid of flares you can fit huge wheels. I hope what I've said gives you some insight into fitting big wheels onto your 1200. As for sunny struts bolting in, to my knowledge they bolt in but I'm not too sure what you need exactly for the conversion.

Cheers
Damo

I am gonna guess that the 1200 ute that he had would have had drum brakes on the front and he upgraded to sunny ones to get disks...
I think that 120Y and sunny struts are pretty much the same...

17'' rims are 2 big. really well for looks but not for performance on the little utes i got new 15'' advnti gold rims which were 6'5'' wide with falken zenuis street slicks.. they dont scrub but i had 2 roll the guards fair bit! using stanza struts in front with disc upgrade!

I gave a pair of A10 Violet struts (Stanza in Oz) to a friend who fitted them on his B110. He had to use the A10 bottom arms, ball joints and steering arms but from what i gather it bolted straight in.
I've compared the A10 stuff with Sunny (B310) and it looks the same so I don't see why they wouldn't bolt straight in but like the a10 bits you'll have to use the bottom arms complete as the bolt spacing on the strut bottom is different.

Thanks for the info guys,
I want to put 16x6.5 rims with 195/45 tyres on my coupe but I don't want to flare the front guards. Does anyone know what offset to use to get this size rim to fit using standard coupe struts. I'm going to roll the inner lip but I want to keep the standard look on the outside.
Thanks for any help

Eddie,
We were lucky in OZ as the 310 struts we got here have the same bolt pattern as the A10 (stanza) struts.

By the way I got an extremely interesting package of reading material yesterday. It will make the C30 project much easier.

Your the king Eddie

What I wrote wasn't that clear. The A10 and B310 are the some bolt pattern here too but neither cars are that easy to find for parts. Wreckers here do not have Datsuns at all. Ever I have had to hoard Datsun parts like crazy to have enough stuff available to play with.

Glad those books are of some use, Errol. I forgot those A10 SSS bits so I'm sending them separately.

this is how i put stanza struts in...

my site

um, i think girlock is an aussie brand???

anyway im guessing the stanza struts you had (mate put in b110) are not the best ones we can find here and therefore are similar to sunny, where as the ones i recommend on my site have the bigger discs and calipers which can not be found on a sunny

thats my best guess, becuase im pretty sure ive heard of people with sunnys (b310) putting stanza struts in and that wouldnt make sense

Hmm, sounds like an Aussie only thing for sure. Is Girlock and Girling the same company do you know? If so there's a chance we got the same callipers etc on another make of car here as a lot of older British cars had Girling brakes.

I'm pretty sure the A10 and B310 brakes we got here were all pretty much the same.
