the firing order is 1-3-4-2, #1 cyl. is obviously the most forward one. the location on the dist. cap is something else as someone may have changed the location

If the A12 distributor was put in exactly the same as the factory, the vacuum advance is pointed at 1:00 o'clock (as if sitting in the car, with 12:00 straight ahead). #1 is on the left side (at about 2:30) and the order is counter-clockwise.

Of course, the more important thing is:
1. the crank is at 5 degrees BTDC for #1 cylinder
2. the points just opening. This is later checked with a timing light for best accuracy.
3. The rotor lines up exactly with the #1 cap tower

The distributor can be removed and reinserted to get it to line up just this way (at 1:00). But it could also be in a different position and meet all three requirements above.

DD,
the L series uses a different setup to drive the dist. there is a spindle shaft that goes into the timing cover that is driven off the crankshaft. it turns both the oil pump, and the dist. if someone has changed the timing chain or pulled and replaced the oil pump things may not line up as they were when new.

Same firing order for any 4cyl car.

Some early ford fours were 1, 3, 4, 2,
Others were 1, 4, 2, 3 or something similar.

My 4-cyl car is 1-3-2-4 (subaru). Even some inline fours differ.

But I know what you mean -- most, if not all Datsun fours have the same firing order: 1-3-4-2.
