ive been thinking about the possibility of fitting a turbo onto the standard 1200 engine. is it possible and what should i do to the engine to ensure that it doesnt explode the minute i start driving it. if so what kind of turbo would suit?

There is no reason you can't turbo a stock 1200 engine, just keep the boost down to about 5 Psi and it should be fine.

I would use a t2 of an ET or EXA or even a daihatsu charade turbo.
