Just wondering if anybody has ever considered of converting their 1200 ute into a 4WD at all???
I was asked about this the other day by a friend who said that it could be highly possible if you did it all properly.
His sugestion was to take a short wheel base 4X4 remove the shell leaving all the running gear then basically bolt the two together.
So in closing has anybody done this? is it able to be registered? and what type of 4X4 did they use???

Old dimlight has been talking about (ever since I've been here!) a 1200 on an old nissan patrol chassis, I think it's very much a work in progress. However he'd be better to tell you....

I think the Nissan Patrol chassis would be a bit to big for the 1200, I was thinking (this really hurts me to say it) more on the line of a Suzuki Sierra or Vitara as the modifications required would not be so extreme.
Reason being the Suzuki's size it not that much different to the ute's , what do you think????

The short wheelbase old patrol (we're talking late 1960's I think) isn't that much longer than a 1200. I think he just happened to have a spare 1200 ( a coupe maybe) and an old patrol chassis, as they say anything is possible with the $ and inclination....the suzuki would probably not be too far off, also a lot are repowered with A12s ( well a lot means I know of two)

A 4x4 Datsun 1200 coupe. Hmmmm, that begs the question.

It's certainly not my bag of tricks, but if you've got all the bits lying around then go for it.
I've got my own ideas about what is good, bad and indifferent, but I don't feel qualified to condemn other peoples projects however weird they may appear.

There's a guy down the road who has a 1200 ute with 6 wheels under it (some old Army truck chassis i think) and a pile of rust in the shape of a 1200 ute on a Suzuki 4x4 chassis. The 6 wheeler looks like the ute body is just slapped on without any major mods. But he told me the Suzuki project used to be a pretty good "piggin" truck.

Neither were ever even attempted to be registered.

He also has/had another 2 1200 utes as part-way finshed projects, a rusty old 1000 ute (that he told me i could have for 800 bucks? about 12 months ago) and 2x1200 sedans. 1 was a turbo A12 that he used to rally and the other had an A15, SUs, ute diff and some kind of roll cage. Although he had this for sale, unregistered, i think it has sold or he's moved it into a shed?

I sorta strikes me as being a contradiction in terms.
None the less, if someone can build one right, instead of wasting a useable body, then it will certainly be, ummm..., errr... different.
