Did you get this car down under? And if so did it come with better bumpers than these big ugly things?

This looks like some sort of small toyota, kinda similar to the TA18 Corolla. I was feeling it was just before the AE86 models..I was right, it's a 1982 model.

See:

The US really did "lose the plot" in regards to bumpers between 1975-1985.

We didn't get any variants of that car in Australia.

Chris.

i think from memory the US design regs from about '73 made it mandatory for all manufacturers to fit impact absorbing bumpers.that could explain why a lot of mid/late '70's US cars looked like dogems. can anyone in the US confirm this as i'm not 100% sure on this.

We got them in NZ as 2nd hand imports. They were called Toyota Sprinters and most had a 2TG twin cam 1600. I was working for a race team who ran these in hatchback form in Group A Touring Car racing. They were a bloody successful racecar down here.

You are exactly right. The DOT (Department of Transportation) in the early '70's ('73-74 to be specific) starting mandating bumpers that could sustain a 5mph impact with no damage. Thus the big bulky bumpers we got in the late '70's-early '80's. For example, our B210's and B310's had big rubber and metal bumpers like this. They weigh a ton and do little for the looks. I am buying an '82 Corolla soon and was hoping maybe they got better bumpers in other markets. Maybe they were sold in Japan with better bumpers?

Even though they sold TONS of them here, no one ever really raced them. The Datsuns of that era were much lighter by comparison, and had alot more factory support than the Toyotas. They are becoming more popular now as drag racers are building lots of them. The engine we got was the 3TC "hemi" 1.8L. Good torque, but not alot of top-end. Great for turbos though
