I believe that there is a short version of the manual, rear drive, 5 speed gearbox that bolts to the CA family of engines.
I am familiar with the one from the series 3 Bluebird with the CA20 engine, but this is the longer one. What does the short one come from?

I've alluded to this before. I'm not certain, but Stewart Wilkins..back when he ran SSS, he pointed out what I think was a S12 "Gazelle" gearbox. It must have shipped in some markets with a CA18DET, these are rarer boxes, but have the same tough internals like the CA18DET/SR20DET boxes. He wanted $480 for one of those and only $150 for the longer S13 CA18DET box.
I like the idea of being able to re-source a replacement gearbox so I went with the plentiful and cheap S13 box.

The MR30 skyline 5speed manual, using a CA20 bellhousing bolts up to teh CA engine. They are refered to as the stumpy skyline box due to it's stumpy look.
Hope i've helped
Cheers Damo

Dattodude. Thanks for the info.
I contacted a local Sydney area wrecker who advised that he could provide a CA16DE engine complete with wiring harness & computer for a price that was greater than what i think i can buy a whole scabby EXA car for.
He also said that he could provide this mysterious gearbox for only $650 [gag, choke], but declined to reveal the car that was to provide it. Thats business, but i'm asking here, & thats freedom of information.
Even if the Gazelle had the single cam CAxx engine, the bellhousing should be the same as the twin cam CAxxDE versions. More homework needed here.
I'm showing my ignorance, but whats the S13 box?
Feral, any advise?
Demojob. These Skyline boxes, are they any bigger in diameter than the series 3 Bluebird boxes? I ask because my friend has discovered that his Bluebird box seems to fit into the manual trans tunnel of his 1200 coupe, so thats a bonus. I wonder what Pintara's used. These things had a CA20 didn't they? The right box will need only to be strong enough to handle a stock CA16DE, so the super strong, but bulky, heavy duty designs are NOT needed.
I will see if i can find a Skyline box to measure. Come to think of it, my eldest son drives a manual Skyline, so if i just sneak out tonight.........

Yep, that's the other option. Also using the CA18DET gearbox housing on the MR30 works too.
But these are "Archaic" gearboxes, when compared to these newer and MUCH tighter and stronger boxes.

Dattodude Whoa, you are leaving me in the dust here. Which is the "other" option that you refer to? I looked at my text & ii refered to Gazelles, Pintara's & Skylines, so i'm in a spin here. Why would you use the CA18DET gearbox "housing" on the MR30, or do you mean the whole gearbox, bolted to the MR30's bellhousing?
Hell, i have just dragged myself out of the 50's, so what are these tighter & stronger gearboxes? You have me swimming in model codes here Chris
