Well, with winter coming on it's getting darker, sooner, for longer & the original headlights in my 1200 coupe might be ok in a well lit city, but out here in Wombat City? Not so good, & for those who have seen the damage they can do to a car when hit, well you know they are the worlds only living rock.
With their nocturnal mates the Wallabys & Kangaroos always waiting to make a suicide dash across your path at night, it was time to do something about the headlights.

Salvation! Number two son has bought another ride & his 120Y is up for sale, so I recovered the Hella H4 inserts that I had donated from my old 1000 sedan & installed them in the 1200.

Now, of course, the 55/60w headlight bulbs draw more current than the original electrics were intended to handle, so it was time for an upgrade, &, while having a chat with Benny this morning, he suggested that I have a look at the relay pack in a Pulsar, & sure enough, my local wrecker had an N13, so I removed the front wiring harness up to the point where it went into the inner guard on the right side.

This is what I brought home for $20

Now this is the wiring harness along with the relay module. Can't tell too much what wires I have in there, so I had best investigate.

This is the relay module & I should be able to incorporporate the starter relay function in here too & still have spare capacity.

Still, I need to find out which wire goes to which terminal & I won't find out by just looking at it.

Ahhh, that's much better, now I can see all the pretty colours.
Along with the harness, I found the owners manual in the donor car & these have the wiring diagram in them, so all is good.

OOPS, perhaps I should have looked for the wiring diagram BEFORE unwraping the harness as there is no diagram in there. Damn!

Has anyone got a wiring diagram for the N13 Pulsar?
Well, it seemed like a good irea at the time.
Thanks for the tip Benny, ... I think.

Now comes the interesting bits.
Has anyone done this job before?
Should I mount it under the dash, or under the bonnet?
Your helpfull input is invited.

Couldn't you have got an aftermarket relay and just run heavy duty wires to the lights with a higher amp fuse ?

That was plan A & I had already bought the parts, but this seemed more 'professional', ... more 'factory' & it tickled my fancy, so I will get a wiring diagram somehow & work it out.

Fair enough. You could spend a few hour with a multi meter ( better you than me)

That would have been the easy way out though!

I just threw a H4 conversion in the 1000 with +25 globes and all good, heaps of light and no frying.

Have fun with the N13 stuff

I would say go for under bonnet, easier for install. Just on the inner guard near battery. Go for that factory look, as well as most of the late model nissans use the same colour coded relays. No thinking required, just plug and play.

You could go for head light relay [given] , horn and starter. and have the spare relay sockets for the "NOS" controller and supercharger electric clutch pulley.

seems like overkill, i hacked in relays by making a harness that plugged into one of the headlamp sockets in the oem harness, that controlled the relays which were under the hood it works nicely and allows you to hook up the headlamps in such a way that they never can be on if the key is off. why arent all cars wired so the headlamps are off when the key is off, some are, subarus for one...

I have found that older EA-EB model falcons ahve a row of relay blocks which you can strip the old wiring out of and purchase some new 'pins' and rewire anyway you want. I have done this in my Cedric wagon and the deceased datto 1000 wagon and my Escort Panelvan for both headlight upgrades and fitting spotlights and the starter realay too! The blocks slide together and can then be mounted under the bonnet neatly. Plus your using new wire so no worries about it not being up to speed or having internal faults!

Hey guys, What is the h 4 conversion you are talking about? I've got a 120y and the headlights are so poor its not funny. I've been to the auto electrician with no joy. The low beam is what I'm really worried about.
Cheers Simon

head to repco and buy a pair of headlights that take the h4 halogen inserts, grab some bulbs while you are there.
whack em in your car and wire em up with a relay and power from the battery.
