Ok, I have my standard A12 in my ute. Now if I buy a GX head and chuck it on. What sorta work am I going to be looking at to get the rest of the engine up to scratch? Now, I'm only 16, but I have a fairly good pay package coming in each week, thanks to not having bills to pay. So what I wanted to ask was. If I get the GX head, can I bore the cylinders out, put larger pistons in, put some nice newish carbs on, port and polish and put a set of tuned extractors on? Is this too much for the old A12 to handle? Will I have problems with reliability? If any of you experienced fellas can share some light that would be hugely appreciated!

Thanks.

Rather see if you can get hold of an a15 bottom end, put the gx head on that, use the a12 flywhell (cuase it's a bit lighter) get a nice high lift cam, you can use either a twin su carb setup or twin side draught carbs (will give better performace, but a bit heavier on gas) it's not really worth spending a lot of money on a 1200 bottom end

I forgot to add to the original post, in Queensland we aren't allowed to drive a car with an engine conversion on our P Plates. So I need to keep the A12 block. :(

P.S. This is going to be my daily, so its doesn't going to be race car material.

very nice.... the good bits start aye haha?
go an A15 and get a high comp oval port head.
work the head by putting both exhaust and inlet L16 vaulves in, double vaulve springs. From memory the inlet was about 1.6mm bigger (diameter) and the exhaust was 2.3mm (diameter) make your own GX head. ring me for more info mate 0404787866 if your interested?
port and polish, 40thou bore, new rings and pistons and youll be cheering!
32/36 webber or maybe some twin side draughts?
all the best, now decision time :D
cheers
Dan

If I was allowed to dump an A15 in my ute and legally be allowed to drive it, I would do it in a flash! But I cant. :( So I got to work with what I got.

~~

Edit: What if I just used my old A12 head and everything. Bore it out, massive port and polish etc.

drop it in after rego n say the ol one blew up and u had this lyin around

its not really an issue I dont reckon,

My 120Y got across the govt pits w an A14 with out needing enginnering, they just changed it on the papers. They umed and ahhed for like 10mins but at the end of the day its fark all cc increase over a fark all stock capacity and requires no mods.

its a replacement engine not an upgrade ;)

as far as i know, you can take the a12 up to a 1380cc, take about 1.5mm off the gx head, with twin su carbs and a cam you can still get up to 18km on a litre

So what do people think of the idea of just using my old A12 head and everything. Bore it out, massive port and polish etc.
