well to answer your questions first.
1 No and No but only if you want to

2 First you have to calculate what the largest
capacity motor you are allowed to go, in
Queensland ummmmmm I can't find it
but you have to ring around and tell them what the weight of your car is and work it out from there. They will tell you what is required, and how much the modification plate is....in Qld its a Blue Plate

For my Sunny it is 2.1 Litre turbocharged or
2.7 litre I think for normally aspirated as the largest capacity I can have, the 1200 is less I believe I can't find the formula arrrggghh

I believe the 1200 is not heavy enough but you must enquire first. You can make it legal but that would be very trying. I really would go the latest model CA18-DET It has an exellent head and intake manifold as well as valve train to cope with 8000 rpm and take up less room than the SR20 in the engine bay. And its definitely legal.
Pics None here but heres a web site worth looking and study it carefully.

I started to install a L20b which is similar in size to the sr20, and I had to recess the fire wall(to make room for the intercooler) and cut the tunnel out and replace it with a 1600 tunnel.
I spoke to an engineer about the conversion and we came to the conclusion that it was easyer to put in the ca18det.
The money that you would spend on fitting the sr you cound have a killer ca18

Ok thanks every one you have convinced me ill go the CA18DET. But the next question is who is the best to get one from in Australia? I have tried a few and its amazing how much the prices vary from one place to another. So far ive been quoted from $1800 all the way up to $4000 for a front cut. Doesnt really matter where abouts in Australia as ill be travelling down to SA and around to Brisbane and back home at christmas and ill get it then.

Hey mate, there is a place in Brisbane called Panel House. It is on the next street up from Moss St. He quoted me $1500 for a half cut if he could keep the struts and such. He has a heap of ca18det's stacked up in the corner and a heap of half cuts in his back yard. Tell me if you want a phone no and I will post it 4 you.

He also has heaps of new and used performance stuff like clutches, turbos intercoolers (custom) ect
