So whats the go?? Im new to the datto 1200 scene and I want to know if this can operate just as a normal fan and not as a heater(ie that it blows not so hot air)?? Hope this doesnt sound like a dumb question because Ive got bits missing everywhere in this car.

How do you turn it on??

I'm also curious about this piece. My truck's missing it. The heater works fine without it but I can see the heater core. My truck's got factory AC so I'm not sure if this piece looks different for my truck or not.

If you want the heater permanently off, you could just dissconnect the heater hose, plugging up the end it came from. That way no heat gets in there at all. Or usually there are flat metal rods that go into the unit that acts as a tap letting hot water from the radiator system into the unit allowing to to heat up (sort of like a heating radiator) if the tap is closed off no hot water gets through, but hot water still goes through the pipe up until that tap, and in sunner you can feel it sometimes.

This is the fan/heater demister unit. This has to be fitted in AUS for you to get the car registered. The 2 speeds on the fan are determined by the heater controls on the dash. The little coil thing inside the unit is the resistor that enables the low fan speed. If you want it to only operate as a fan, just remove the heater core at the base, and eith plug up, or connect up the heater hoses from the engine, with a long piece of heater hose. I think even if you had airconditioning, this unit should still be in the car. Later model boxes look different. This particular one is from the 1970-1973 model 1200s. The later model ones were made by "Smiths" from memory, and had some metal construction, and kind of looked like 1600 (510) units. The heat for heater/demisters is always derived rfom radiator coolant water. The heat of the engine provides the heat for the demister.

The blue wires at the back are the power feed wires to make the thing turn.

So basically its not a normal non-hot fan, but primararly a heater, but with a few modifications I can make it a non-heater right???I live in Townsville and sitting at the lights without even a fan doesnt appeal to me...

The TX3 does, but the Evo 2 has Climate Control

*Note to anyone who is interested in the Evo 2 I just mention. Yes, I own one, but its in Vic and Im in QLD and I missed getting it through the normal registering channels before they changed, so I actually mighten be getting it at all :(. But thats another story ;)*

You can use this as a non-hot fan. Simply move the hot/cold lever to the cold side, then pull the knob to turn the fan on.

The temperature lever should turn off the flow of coolant from the engine, so only stagnant coolant is sitting in the core. Theoretically the core cools down in a minute, and cool air from outside blows into the car.

In practice it works OK. Just make sure the valve on the heater hose closes all the way. For true no-heat, disconnect both hoses under the hood. You could also connect them together with a length of copper pipe to bypass the heater core.

If the inside baffles still open and close ok, you can turn on the fan, turn off the water valve(on the right side) and push in the "VENT" knob. Cool air will blow out the front.
Even with the water valve open, cool air will blow through the front, with a little heated air coming out the bottom.

Thanks for the help guys...now the problem is to get the damn thing going. For some reason its non-operation the one in the car, but I have a feeling that when the prior owner ripped the stereo from the car that it sort of severed the power going to the fan :(.

You guys should see the mess of wires under the dash, not pretty. PLUS there is an alarm system wired in there somewhere :(.
