I put some retractables in my ute, but i had a bit of a problem with the units jamming when the seats were right back, as the seat would rub the belt, and they wouldn't retract. In a sedan, you could probably move them back a bit more...
Depends what sort of seats you have aswell. I don't know what mine are, but they aren't stock.
Also, I haven't tried 120y seatbelts. mine were from a galant i had laying around out the back.

ok, so just to clarfiy this post.... i have a '79 1200 ute, will the the 120y retractable or the sunny retractable seatbelts be the best swap over? or would something completely different be better?

I bought new inertia reel seat belts for my 1000 sedan from Repco in the mid 80's I used all the original holes, but need to go back to exchange the buckle part. These came with a self supporting cable & were available in diferent lengths. The 1000 mounting is in the back floor area & i simply needed some with longer "stalks" which i got with no problems.

They worked a treat, but i regretted buying them because the original 1000 seat did not offer a lot of support & the original belts held me in quite nicely. The inertia reel ones offered no support at all & it took some of the fun out of a hot run up the Razorback mountain near Sydney.

I goy my local Repco to get one in for me,the problem I had was the lower section of the belt that holds the retractable mechanism fould on the seat runner,two option not fit them or drive with my knees around my ears.
I opted for the first option.
And a point to think about,retractable seatbelts should be verticle in operation and on a 1200 the upper mounting point is behind the lower one.

i'll check out the 120y belts thanks for the info if the body of the inertia reel sits on an angle it will sometimes not retract properly something to do with the belt needing to run at 90degres to the reeel

The only problem with the B210 single-belt solution (the shoulder and seat belt are one piece) is that the retractor is slightly bigger, but it sits down quite low.

Where can you get new fixed seat belts?

as was said earlier the 120y ones bolt in so just bolt in new ones and you'll be in a win win situation

you can get new aftermarket ones from autobarn, about $85 each. they list for 1000's, 120y's, but not 1200's. from looking at them and where the bolt holes are for the orig 1200 ones the belt will cover across the back door opening - making it awkward for any backseat passengers to get in/out, also problems retracting. don't particularly want that may just go with new fixed seatbelts

maybe a new spring or ring your local parts store and see how much new ones are. in all truths they should be replaced anyway being 28 years old or more. get some nice colour coded ones for your car. anyway thats what i'm going to do but someone to ask may be an auto retrimmer about retensioning
