I have put a few aftermarket computers inside the original computer housings for customers due to inssurance reasons. Even when the cars have been inspected nothing has been said.

the engineer said, regarding engine size, as long as it can be proven safe.
He also said it had to retain the origional ecu, which could pose a chellenge,

not that i would do it of course??? but why couldnt you get the factory computer, take the cover off and disguise an after market computer in the toyota cover, if you ran cats and tuned it should be ok?

From what ive read the standard computer sounds like a headache, the signals change colour through the loom and there is a few modules along the way, might be a lot simpler to make up a new loom and start with an aftermarket computer. That was i could get rid of the air flow meater

its dooable if you lift the bonnet and gear box tunnel about 1.5inches (approximat measurements to clear the steering but the the bonnet will have to be raised to match, could make and interesting project to also redesign the front end with a custom bonnet set up (fiberglass edges on the stocker)
only obsticle... engeniers cert if your in vic or nsw..... most other states ok if you can prove its safe.

I dont think go_the_datto will have much troubles with a V8, he has done it all before and he has the I can do it attitude. Only this time it will be a different engine.

you should definatly do it. Have you seen the picture of a 1200 coupe convertable with a supercharged 392 chrysler hemi on this site? If that can be built, then what you want to do will be a walk in the park! lol

he told me he was gonna post some pics of his 1974 datsun 180B SSS with Holden V8 when he got his computer upgraded. he should be able to help u.

you will more than likely have to change to rack and pinion steering, i have a 240C with an underbonnet area the size of a kingswood and i couldn't make it fit around the steering box - so i had to use a commodore setup.

you might be able to use a fiat X1/9 setup, they're very compact units and i have one in excellent condition incl tie-rod ends if you want it.

the 1UZFE is basically a 700mm cube, so if you can make that fit in a 1200 (ooh, that's gonna be tighter than a frogs arse) then you're a magician!

the exhaust ports point downwards at a 45deg angle on this engine - straight at the engine mounts. with little to no room left after the r&p conversion + new engine mounts, i'm thinking you'll have to mount it using an engine cradle off the front of the 'chassis'.

you'll also more than likely need a front sump engine. there are three types - front, centre and rear. the rear mount will foul on tyour steering components, the centre mount will foul on your crossmember so that only leaves the front mount.

you'll need a good radiator, like a 180B radiator and shroud, or better yet and alum radiator (the std soarer ones are too big to fit even in the 240C) but that's $$$ and a last resort option. the 1UZ isn't a hot running engine and relies more on oil cooling than water cooling. that said, you'll still need a 16in thermo.

oh, and the oil filter will need relocating. luckily, the factory units are already remote, so just unbolt the oil filter adaptor from the engine and modify the std steel lines to accept barb fittings (ENZED did mine for $120) and run flexible oil line to wherever you want to mount the oil filter adaptor (mine's up a little high in my engine bay for easy access - prob not the best place but i warm it up before i drive) in the engine bay.

other than it PHYSICALLY fitting, these are your other obstacles.

ok you may laugh and call me silly but i am going to try to fit a 1UZ-FE in to a 1200 ute that i was building up for a ca18det, but i have a lot of interest in putting in the toyota v8 now.
I tgot onto one at a good price so i have made a few measurements and consolted an engineer and i am going to give it a go and see how far i get,
was wondering on your thoughts..
