David, you never fail to surprise,... & impress me. I have been a Radio National listener here for years, but i had no idea that you were cruising their website.
Very well researched, & as i said, i'm impressed.

The least expensive place around here (Seattle) is 2.03/gallon. That's $0.54/liter USD (0.72 AUD/liter).

Factoid: In the USA, gasoline/petrol is less expensive than one-serving size bottled water:
gasoline: $2/gallon
water: $3.81/gallon
(based on local Safeway supermarket price for a 20oz Aquafina bottle at $1.19. Perrier is a similar price).

Australia too: Bottled water: $1.50.

Of course, plain distilled or spring water is far less expensive, under $1/gallon. But just in case brand name water is better than the plain stuff, don't you think it's worth it? Same as with gasoline.

Remember that we are comparing Imperial & the smaller US gallon here.
None the less, even with a correction factor, the US fuel still looks to be cheaper.
[Imperial Gallon = 4.54609 L]
[US gallon = 4?L]

SF Bay Area, California
$2.30/gal for 87octane
$2.40 for 89
$2.50 for 91
This is probably the highest, not average, price you'd find around here.

Hey DD,

Yep we've got the same here (Leaded Replacement Petrol). The problem is here in Adelaide, the 'LRP' is about 6 cents a liter more expensive than Unleaded - which is over $1.06 a litre at the moment!!!!

I think that equates to about $3.12USD per gallon!! OUCH!!!

How much is it in the USA at the moment?

TnP

You have not been using leaded fuel for a long time as it is unavailable from normal fuel outlets & has been illegal fpr quite a while.
If the reconditioner says that he has replaced the valve seats, & that you can use lead free gasoline, then fill 'er up at the cheap pump. You have paid for the seats in the head, so go ahead & reap the savings at the bowser.
[For our overseas friends, 'Bowser' was once the brand name of a particular make of service station puel pump, but the name is now genericly used to describe ALL the diferent makes of pumps at a service station]

Hi
Another question..
When you do an engine rebuild with a view to running unleaded fuel or premium - are there any special things you need to take into consideration, like valve's, valve seats etc etc. If so, what names, or brands need to be used.
Thanks a lot.

He wrote when you do a engine rebuild.
I presume then he is going to take the head off. Just take it to a cylinder head place and tell them they must inspect the valve seats.
If they are not made for unleaded fuel, tell them to put in new one's that will be unleaded compatible.
I also did some research here in South Africa.
A old Nissan mechanic told me that I must not use unleaded fuel.
The valve seats as dodgeman mentioned are not correct for this application.
I must change it to hardened valve seats and then it will be fine.

No worries. Just use Unleaded fuel with lead-replacement additives in it. In the USA it's the only kind of fuel we've had since about 1988 (Unleaded). No problems with valve wear, we don't change the valve seats, and we don't add anything out of a bottle.
