Check your wheel bearings for excess play

so on my way to work i hear gonk/knock sound comming from one of the front wheel. i kinda ignore the sound and countinue driving. About a 100m further it makes the same sound again and this time i'm certain i didn't drive over anybody's pet. I pull over, give the ute a good inspection for anything that looks out of place excluding the frightend squirle next to the radiator. Anyway long story short, everytime the sound occured the brakepedal seemed to drop ending in the result that my brakes are now entering the stage where i'm not gonna have brakes if this knock thing happens another couple of times

any suggestions where and what to look for this afternoon when i pull the drums off?
