All R31 skylines were 28 spline, Pintaras were 25.

Falcon, 25 spline up to the EB series2 where they went to 28 spline

This is assuming that the diffs haven't been swapped at some stage. The R31 info is straight out of the workshop manual. Jump onto the skyline forum and they might be able to tell you more. Looking at the diff tag may help, unless it has been opened. . .

Not 100% sure on skylines, as they have different discs/calipers to Commodore stuff.

But I expect that you'll need a 12,13,14mm (Maybe 17mm for the caliper) sockets. You'll need a pair of vicegrips or pliers. potentially a slidehammer to break the bearings from their seats. But a hammer is normally enough. Drain the oil (pull the backing plate carefully. Do this before you pull the axle, or you'll end up with oil all over you.

No circlips that I know of.

Pulling the inspection plate should tell you what kind of diff.

The way to check is:
28 spline is a 4 pinion diff, (looks really busy inside hemisphere)
25 spline is a 2 pinion diff, (looks kind of aenemic)
The LSD versions have springs and $hit in the hemisphere. Available in both 25/28 spline. But the 25 spline LSD was pretty much only found in Fords.

Do any of you guys with CA's & R31 diff's know if it's possible to identify a 28 spline diff just by looking, or is it case of pulling off the hub & counting the splines?
Any idea what tools will I need to get the hub off....... Circlip pliers, split pin remover, sockets?....... I have to do this at the wreckers & would like to avoid lugging my whole toolbox down there if possible.
