My buddy and I lifted a CA out of a silvia with the turbo and mani removed and all accessories removed with an exaust system and a chain. The car was on stands and we had ramps on either side to help us lift it high engouh. An A series has gotta be cake, but got a cherry picker available now and that was just a drift car so we weren't too careful.

strong bit of wood, or steel and rope, two people lifting off the suspension struts and if possible a third to guide it over the radiator support panel.

Done it twice with1200rc but now have a block and tackle, takes longer but safer and more precise (unless you loose you balance and almost fall thorugh the wind screen.)

Or i use my mechanics hoist and engine crane..... takes 5mins max after all bolts and hoses etc disconeected

I have done it on my own in a Suzuki Lj80, and with a mate in a 1200 using a bar, and I reckon its a bastard of a job.
Find a tree or rig up a frame it just makes it so much easier.

But to answer your question yes you and a mate will be able to remove the A12.

I'd say the problem isnt the weight (me and my bro loaded and unloaded 3 a12s complete with flywheel, oil, manifolds etc on and off my ute no worries.) In my mind the problem would be having to lean into the engine bay to lift it (I see back injuries) so the pole and chain idea sounds good to me.

Great info and suggestions. I like the pole idea. I may try that with a 4x4 and a couple of straps. I think I'll probably need a third person to bolt it into the engine stand. Maybe my wife can do that :)

a method i have heard of... (but not tried)

is having a strong metal pole wider than the car, chain the engine up to the pole and have 1 person on each end of the pole (ie standing either side of the car) and lift it out that way...

this method could also be done with wood/rope provided its strong enough..

would take the strain off leaning into the engine bay

two blokes should do it... (a third might be handy to guide it out)... me and my brother lifted my complete a12 10 meters to the back shed after hoisting it out of my ute with a crane...

good luck

You dont really need two blokes, i aint anything big and i managed to lift my A12 out of my sunny!
kind of easily bit of a strain but get pumped up before you do it
I hit the front wall tho (dont matter its a ride off anyway) but if your looking for carefull transplant then get two blokes andlift it out. As phunkdokta said its the lifting up of the car at the front that is the problem, you think youve got it out then theres another 10cm to go!!

Definately not 200lbs with head and gearbox removed. I can lift them on my own quite easily not gently in and out of an engine bay though. Two or three people and you'll do it easily. THe third person can take a bit of weight and guide at the same time.

A mate and I used to lift a complete A series minus box out of our 1200's and we are nothing special, so 2 average blokes will be able to handle it.
The killer part is the car lifting with the engine due to less weight on the suspension. It feels like you gotta keep lifting and lifting. I recommend you take the front wheels off and put stands under the crossmember.

Boys...

Just disconnect the steering, remove the radiator, and drop the engine/gearbox down instead. Undo the crossmember, and lower arms and drop it down with a trolley jack.

Without the the front wheels on, you should be able to lift the car over the dropped engine.

This is how I put my CA18DET into my engine bay. I had the problems of the turbo almost not squeezing past the body rail.
