Yeah. My ratchet has the Sidchrome brand and part number on the handle. The handle is slightly longer than a normal male ratchet, so you can apply a bit more leverage to it. It has a loud clicking sound when you turn it.

Cheers.

I have a ratchet that is female 1/2 inch, the way it works is, it can only turn one way and it has a 1/2 inch square bit that sits in and you can push it through to be either on one side or the other, so that it will lock clockwise or anticlockwise etc. Or for your application here, you could take the bit out. You can borrow it if you want to ship it overseas.

ediot: i just your comment snowy, mine doesnt have a sidchrome stamp, maybe someone made them too, i dont have a box or any sockets, i found mine at a second hand store, does yours have a click? mine is just smooth with no noise.

Yeah I did think there was one out there, just I never seen them. Only kind that comes to mind is and old scissor jack handle but that would have been about 10mm.
At my age I am positive I still have plenty to see

Phunk,

Many years ago Sidchrome made female ratchets. They came with a square drive piece which fitted in the drive (female) hole. To reverse you simply changed the drive piece to the other side of the ratchet. A very handy tool to have in the kit, which after over 30 years is still complete.

At my age I'm positive I know the difference between male and female.

i know that a 14 mm open ender spanner fits, but i've also found a 17 mm ring spanner will fit.this helps in 2 ways (a) it's usually a longer spanner,so more leverage & (ii) it places the torque on all 4 corners of the plug & (3) you
can get another spanner on the end of the 17 mm for yet more leverage.oh,& a bit of heat into the transmission case will expand it enough to be a bit easier.

If the drain plug has a male head then the simplest way to loosen it would be to use a female half inch square drive ratchet. By lengthening the handle with a bit of pipe you will get greater leverage. No need to use hammers, vicegrips, chisels and other implements of destruction.

Freak, yeah this is the drain plug. What is a 1/2 socket bar? I may try the hammer as one last attempt but even with the mallet I was getting the wrench to slip around the head (rounding off). May be too late to try anything else with that spanner. What I don't get is why couldn't this be a simple 14mm Hex head? Is there some reason to use this stupid square head!?!??
