i just assumed that it would be fine due to the being reset for the application, although it is using a different cam.....gawd got me thinking now!

I shall also check the tappets aswell but that shouldnt matter too much until its firing and working...

why don't you start at the beginning and tell us what you have just done to the motor - what you changed, what bits and pieces were removed and refitted etc...

Hi Dave.
Have you had the distributor out???
If so it may be out a couple of teeth.
To test this theory you must line up the two timing marks on the front of the motor on TDC (top dead centre).
When these marks are lined up, with the dizzy cap off.
The rotor button should be pointing to either plug one or,four and pointsshould be wide open at this point.
If it's not then remove the dizzy and rotate it around until it is pointing at either plug one or four.
If you wish to check which cylinder it's ready to fire on, remove the tappet cover, and the cylinder which is about to fire will have tappet clearance on both inlet and exhaust valves.
Once you have found this out, then your rotor will then have to be pointing to that spark plug, making sure that the points are in the wide open position.
Remembering it's only one or four that the motor will fire on. when these two timing marks are in line.
hope this has helped you out.
bye for now.

YEah we've got the timing light all setup and rearing to go its just we cant use it as of yet!!

WEll thats exactly what i thought Dodgeman its just we cant get the distributor to send its spark at the right time, we practicly tried the whole spectrum of advance and retard its just nothign would happen!! I didnt check if its on the exhaust or compression stroke, i just assumed that it would be fine due to the being reset for the application, although it is using a different cam.....gawd got me thinking now!

I shall also check the tappets aswell but that shouldnt matter too much until its firing and working...
We shall see tommrow when i fit the other dizzy

Dave

Off topic here but does anyone knows how many countries in the world employ the jury system?? legal work...

If you cant get the timing right, take the dizzy out, and moved it around on the teeth untill it does.

If you have compression, fuel & spark, then it 'should' fire. If the spark arives at the right cylinder at the right time, then it WILL fire.

Make sure that the spark is ariving in the culinder when it is on the compression stroke & not the exhaust stroke. It's one of those mistakes that is easy enough to do. Once you have made sure that all is right, then pull the plugs & shoot the timing with your trusty timing light while spinning it with the starter. [Phone a friend to help with this one]

If you have everything else right, then refit the plugs & leads [in the right order] then it will start right up.

Figured out the starter issues, my brushes were wayyyy too short so i sourced a 120y's starter which had been reco'd for $50, nice one...
It ticks but it just wont fire!!!
Everything is wired in fine but my dizzy isnt in sparking at the correct times. ive tried it at just past center to fully advance and it just wont send the spark at the right time. I know it sparks as we tried it with the plug out but earthed and it does spark.
its got fuel and it does pump it out... i think ill try and use the A12 dizzy i have lying around here, dwell angle anywhere between 0.45 - 0.55mm yeah? and dwell angle 49 - 55 degrees? Any other ideas?
It has new leads (topgun), plugs (v groove NGK) and coil (GT-40RT)

Ill try again tommrow, for now i wont get any sleep...

Dave
