I found that Autronic Lincoln in Newcastle is a top fella. He's sorting out the removal of the dwell board, and the supply of the R500 kit and 4 new high energy external coils.
Should be roasting the tyres in less than a month, maybe as quick as 2 weeks.
Let the Sun start shining for again! With the car running I might have time to find a religion.. or a life.
Lesson: Never get an SMC without CDI. The dwell board can really stink. I was unlucky enough to have a partially buggered dwell board. The dwell board needs to be removed by a specialist not a backyard job.
The SM4 has everything I wish the SMC had, software dwell support!! yippee! But with the external CDI unit, the SMC can get on with what it's good at.
Why have I been quiet lately?.. it's because my autronic ECU and it's ignition probs have been killing me for the past month or two or six.

Hey Chris, Glad to hear you are making progress. I have heard from others that tech support from the Autronic guys can be pretty ordinary at times, I hope that hasn't been the case with your situation.

Hey guys. Time for an update.
I've had to learn about ignitions over the past week or two.
I now understand all about it.
I've found that my SMC dwell board is not working on all 4 ignition outputs. When you get a dwell board, you sacrifice ign 4 output on the ECU for tacho. You HAVE to run wasted spark using IGN 1,2 for 4 cyl, and 1,2,3 for 6 cyl.
Anyway, my dwellboard is faulty after all my efforts to get it working. IGN2 is overcharging the coils with 67deg dwell, and ignition 1 is doing bugger all with 4deg dwell. I found when I "enabled" special dwell control option in engine setup on the v1.92, that the dwell angles dropped to 45degrees and 3 degrees respectively.
Hopefully my ECU will get fixed and I'll be able to start running in my engine properly soon.
Cheers, Chris
ps. I am going CDI, this dwell board crap is for idiots with a lot of time on their hands. So I'm also needing to remove the dwell board from my SMC.
pps. If you ever choose autronic, spend the extra money and go CDI from the beginning. Otherwise you'll be treated worse than a leper, and finding answers will drive you crazy.

Thanks for the help, But didn't you read the original post?
I'm not running the standard ignition. I'm running an unusual config by using the stock coils with a 2 channel Bosch ignitor and wasted spark method.
I am going back to using the "standard ignition", to see if this fixes it. (which it should for 98% of the problem).

I had a bad experience with the CA 18 coil packs when I used to own an EXA. They went one after the other. $265 each + tax at the time.
My thoughts on the problem is the location of the coil packs, being fastened to the head, surely cant be a good thing. The amount of heat was rediculous.
