I thought that the sandwich plate was supposed to help spigot the startermotor in the right position. Whan I haven't used one the starter pinoin/ring gear mesh has sounded awful.

I don't remember seeing a 5mm alloy plate, Mine has a pressed steel one which would make 1 maybe 2mm difference.

easier way to get the throwout bearing closer to the pressure plate is to remove the 5 mm thick alloy plate, which is purely a cover to keep
rubbish out of the clutch assembly.you can get a half moon shaped plate from a sunny auto, which will bolt in,or use the stock 1200
one & just drill the holes out to 10 mm.this will also give a little more clearance around the transmission.

Ok, here's a picture on what was modified, body extended by 7mm, could have gone a touch more but it works with a brand new clutch, so no problem there.

sounds like you have it all sorted out, but some good advice from exp. Better take notes on all your modifications for later reference. I have done lots of modifying and later on had to replace some parts and got year model parts mixed up,lol

Ok, I have pulled the gearbox out and measured the difference between the two. I get 7mm which means a spacer just wont cut it (as the shank is only 12mm long), so I have sent it to my engineer who will modify 2 to make one, unless of course someone has a long A12 one in Christchurch

I am presently looking at either fitting a spacer or finding an A12 carrier. I have three gearboxs here and they all have the same carrier, but I doubt they all came off the back of an A15. Does anyone know the exact measurement difference between the two? I was thinking maybe 5mm?
