You should be able to sign a Statutory Declaration and tell your story on how you came to get it.
Go into the DOT and ask them about what you want to do.
Or if you have a few free hours and like being on hold, call them.

Ok heres the deal repairable write of over 15 yo can be repaired and put back on the road you will need proof of sale and a rwc to get it registed .A repairable write under 15 yo must under go a viv check .You have to show reciets for proof parts you have brought to show there not stolen ,they may even take the vechile for testing .once they have give you the viv certificate then you can get a roadworthy and register it ....As for your car they will never know its been in a smash unless you tell them. even if you do say something to them they cant say #### to you as once its repaired all you gotta do is get a rwc and pay the rego ..hope this helps

Only one way to find out.
If you gonna invest your time and money - no point asking anyone but the people who will inspect it for rego.

Repairable writeoff means its repairable.
Its only gonna need a blueslip inspection.

A panel shop is the easiest way to go. But everything costs money reguardless of how easy you think it might be.

Its legal for a registered panel shop to cut and shut a car.

Its legal for anyone to do it.
Its only legal for a licensed tradesman to charge for it.
Its illegal for a licensed tradesman to charge for it and do it unsafe.
Its not illegal for anyone to do it themself and do it shonky but it is illegal for them to knowingly sell it in this condition..

I am holding back from saying " I hear you need an engineers certificate for it"
