I switched from leaded to unleaded just recently when leaded petrol became unavailable locally.

I use an additive (Flashlube) but I definately need to retard the timing otherwise I get pinging.

In the states, all our Datsun 1200s have run unleaded since around 1989. I see no valve seat wear in any of the engines I've torn down.

In 1974, Nissan changed the valve seat material, presumably for unleaded fuel. In 1976, Calfornia models had a catalytic converter, so required Unleaded. They didn't change the valves or seats that year.

It could also mean that he retarded the timing a little to account for the difference between 91RON unleaded and 95RON leaded fuel...?

thats good to know, on the 1200 i just bought the seller informed me that when he re-built the engine he set it up for unleaded, i'm assuming he means he's put in hardened valve seats

Na no damage, in South Africa we jus made the change from leaded to lead replacement petrol in jan this year. So any i phoned up a nissan dealer to find out what fuel i should use and he said i should have been using unleaded from a long time ago,

Dont even need t retard the timing.

afaik you can also get hardened valves. tpn-show i was under the impression a10's and some early a12's had copper valve seats.
