to test how anal retentive you really are, will you put the old cams back in with the correct cam timing just to dyno "what should have been" ?

I've been to San Francisco several times, but there'll be nothing resembling 'backdoor action' going on..

I need to trial fit the new cams to measure up for the solid lifter shims, I won't be putting the standard cams back in and getting the engine re-dyno'ed. It's not worth the money or the time to take steps backwards.

So yeah..it's all pretty exciting.

Yeah thats what I am getting at. The way it was running, could well have resulted in the belt jumping.

Gucci, and very high profile..

Oh..you mean the cams....

Tomei 270deg/9.25mm in/ex.

As for rego issues, that was entirely related to ignition.. damn autronic dwell board But with the backfiring and cranky noises it made, it may well have jumped a tooth back then.

Chris

Its interesting the way its out. I wouldnt overlook the troubles you had originally being the cause. From what my mate said from when you originally took it for rego, It wasnt the happiest little motor. And it wouldnt be the first time a belt has jumped.

The plus side is how you say, It can only be better.

Spent some of the day removing my standard cams.

I found that both the intake and exhaust were both out by one tooth on the timing belt, that's 1 in 48, which completely screws with the power I should have expected in my last dyno run. So my intake cam was retarded 7 degrees and the exhaust cam was advanced 7 degrees. This meant less air going in, and less power on the power stroke. The exhaust cam advance, would result in more turbo lag. The timing belt stuff up was the engine builder... So everyone I've had do work on the Datto has succeeded in providing me with a substandard result.

So don't ask me for recommendations if you need a CA rebuilt.

I now need to make up a 'retainer and valve spring remover tool', just like pictured in the nissan manual.

I've also got to fold up some zinc plated steel plate for the radiator support panel to get the air flow to the radiator maximised.

So if your are interested in what is happening under the cam covers on a CA18 have a look at my photos from the day.

Latest Photos of Cam upgrade

So I found some interesting things, which is good news. Things can only get better.
