I thought the 60series had a stronger input shaft and slighty stronger gearset. 2nd gear is also a different ratio to the 56a.
Everything about the 60-series is stronger than the 56-series. That's why it is a bigger, heavier box. Same length though so it easy to swap.

2nd gear? Even different 56 boxes have different gears, see the Tech Section article

The standard 1200 gearbox is a 56A with the smaller hole for the clutch cable & thr 120Y box is the same thing with the larger hole.
The clutch cables are the same except for the boss that fits into the hole, so if you have a replacement box for your 1200 & the cable flops around in the box like c**k in a sock, you now know how to fix that.

i thought the other reason for the dogleg was to set the gears up in a way that was stronger, kept you from downshifting into second and such.

Yeh thanks Dodgeman, excuse my lack of posting skills That is first & reverse you see in the extension housing.
For rally use the dogleg gearbox also has the major advantage of the first & reverse gate being inline. This allows you to more effectively remove the car from any "dry bog" situations by driving the lever up and down the gate quickly whilst droping the clutch. Much quicker than using the conventional shift pattern. I often wonder if this was a deliberate consideration when Nissan were developing their rally option boxes because its a great application of the dogleg pattern and can mean the difference between parking it for the day or finishing the event.

Is this the picture that you wanted?

So i'm guessing that's first & reverse in the extention housing.

The 60 series five speed gearbox is mostly found with a standard five speed shift pattern & this is an overdrive box. There is supposed to be a dogleg, direct-in-fifth version, but I don't recall anyone saying that they have ever actually seen one.

They exist because to the best of my knowledgw this model is the gearbox that was the base for the gearbox in my rally coupe. It has been very modified so looks different to the standard unit on the inside. See my photos for details because I dont know how to link the pic
As has already been implied they are fairly rare and therefore worth lots of money in standard or modified trim.
They are a very good gearbox because they accept lots of modifications relatively easily.

I have 2 X 60 series 5 speeds, one is dogleg and the other is conventional H pattern.
