Not sure about 52% increase, but it does claim an aditional 10hp. mods included modify mechanical advance spring in distributor and changing of the secondary main jet in the carby.

Its been a while, since I last read the article...

what ever happened to that "supertune your A12" article? If I remember that explained that a power increase of 52% was possible by tuning the standard engine

I'd say he means fitting an electronic ignition distributor to the engine. As described in the Tech Section. Will give it better performance at high rpm.

You can play with the Ignition System too.

Hey mitey.
Good to hear another NZer is on here. U on DOCNZ (www.datsun.co.nz) if not come join its a good site.
Nice coupe you got there. I'd say go for the a15 if its for street use and mabey some extractors or carbies. Should go a treat.

OK as the king of cheap I'll chime in:

I would start with the suspension first. You can use 240Z springs with one coil cut out and lowering blocks in the rear. Use 7/8 front and 1/2 rear bar. Get a decent quality set of gas dampers , KYB's are usaully pretty cheap or check e-bay. Get some jelly bean mags and put on 175/60 13's these won't have clearance issues but will change the gearing.....more go but more RPM's on the freeway. We raced our 1200 with the cheapy suspenion set up first and a bone stock A12.
Later for the motor use the Weber 32/36 with a header(extractors) and 2 " exhaust. If you wanted to you could pull the head and put in stock A14 valves and use the GX dual valves springs............this set up ought to get you about 10 HP over stock.
Brakes , well Datsun brakes seem to be weak put in some good qaulity pads should help but if you get any sort of real power you'll need better breaks.
The above should keep you busy for about a year.
I will tell you I've run my 1200 at the track since 1989 and we are finally getting around to putting in an A15...........I bought every goody (used) that you see under the suspension part of the tech section first and I'm happy with the car. To be realistic you don't buy a 1200 for it's straight line speed although a turbo twin cam will solve that problem.
