The gearbox in the link has a rear facing drain plug.

If the gearbox that you are looking to buy wont turn over by hand in all positions, then factor in a strip & fix, then hope that something isn't broken inside. If it is a good box, then you should be able to turn the input shaft without difficulty in all gears.
If 1200 utes were sold in NZ with five speeds, then you should be able to service [repair] it if necessary.

I'm ready to stick my neck out & say that it is 95% likeley to be an overdrive model with conventional shift pattern.
On the upside, it's a right drive version with cable clutch operation.

ok - so in summary on this box, its obviousl a 60 series, its just a matter of if its a dog leg or not.

Am I correct in understanding that it will not be a 1:1 fifth?

And what's the suggestions on it if I can't turn it over in those three gears? worth getting or not worth the risk of it being a major?

this box looks the same and is stated as a dog leg

dogleg box

Thanks for input

Both the F5W56A & the F5C56A are non overdrive. Both of these 56 series five speeds are dogleg types.
There were no 56 series overdrive gearboxes.

ok so what's the difference on the other side? - I can soon check it out.

A main concern at present is the box not turning over. Not really wanting to spend much on something that's gonna need work.

The only 1:1 5th boxes I've had are the 71 option 1 nismo box and the 93 S15 6 speed.

Yeah the other ID feature is on the other side of the transmission. Too bad the picture isn't of that side.

This thread might set it straight.

If you can't turn the input shaft in the lowest gears, there has to be a reason as it should turn without too much drag & it should turn smoothly. If it doesn't, then something is stoping it, & that something does not seem to be on the outside of the box.
Is it even remotely possible that it has engaged two gears at the same time? [selector/ linkage problem]

I don't recall the location of the drain plug. where should it be on a std pattern box?

I figured it might be a std pattern box as the three positions which won't turn would then be 1st, 2nd and rev - the three lower gears.

What's likely to be up if it won't turn in those three? The others are free but didn't seem 'geared' to me. It may have been sitting for a while, will it just need freeing or are we talking more serious stuff...

If you can't turn the input shaft by hand when in either first or reverse, then somethin ain't right.

Is '60' cast into the side, but the drain plug points straight back? it's a dogleg

Now where is that wretched drain plug.

There's the picture.

Well here is that 'mate from New Zealand' turned up bright eyed and bushy tailed.

Thanks for the thread Mark and thanks for the info so far.

I'm after a std pattern with 5th as overdrive. I'm going to put it behind a A12 but am hoping to upgrade the engine to a A14/15.

A friend contacted and said he has a datto 5 sp so I went down there and figured if I turn it over by hand I should get some idea if its a dog leg or not by what way the output turns when I turn the input spline but...

If I put it in the forward left position I can't turn the spline, the same in the rear left and the rear right. In the forward and rear middle and the forward right I can turn it over but seems straight through so I guessed my figuring didn't stack up.

Its a smooth box and on the right side it has the nissan logo and '60'. On the top front of the bellhousing it has 'E B 0623764' that's the only codeing except #10 on the left side and #4 right rear.

here is a picture Datto box photo
