got to say that i always thought only the 56a 5 speeds were 1:1,everything else was an overdrive 5th.thought there was a factory close ratio gear set for the 60 series boxes.a friend was importing such a close ratio 60a box
from new zealand for me,but when it got to australia it had mysteriously change back to a standard ratio box.probably was spotted when it was being cleaned for export & substituted by someone who knew what it was.bugger.

It has 60 on one side #9 on the other and
F A ... 9Y46013 on the top of the bellhousing. Took the day off work and went to another yard I have never been to,

Guess what I found?

4 more 5 spds, two of which are the Dog leg trans. Several 4 spds, a couple of automatics. All of them are still in the cars. I did not take any tools with me but I WILL be returning.

I found a 5spd gear box, 1:1 final drive, 60 on the side, smooth case. what is it?
Bluemax, write down all the numbers cast on the case, and the numbers stamped on the top edge. Let us know. Also, if you can get pics to us it will help. I'm sure many of us are very curious about the box you have found.

Have you done a gearbox rebuild? are there aftermarket bearings & sinchro's available for the 5 speed 60 series?

Yes.
If you contact your local aftermarket bearing suppliers with the right bearing codes they should be able to source the bearings for you from Asia. Not Asian made bearings but good quality stuff. This is what I did when modifying my 60 series straight cut box and you will save a heap of dollars.

The 60 series five speed was a standard fitment in some US models, so I presume that parts to service these transmissions will be much less difficult to locate there & hopefully, much less expensive.
Keep in mind that Bluemax lives in the US.

I have not yet done a rebuild on the five speed, but I hope to be able to ship my 56A box off to Ferral within the next month or so. Yes, I have braced myself for a bill that reflects the rarity of a thirty something year old gearbox overhaul, particularly when the box & all the parts for it were never sold here.
To add to the financial burden, I hope to make some changes to it if we can source the right parts, & that may involve the purchase of one or even two damaged gearboxes if they are available.
It's only money.

Boofhead is absolutely right, the 'proper' five speeds are fantastic to drive, particularly on a winding road in the hills where you can keep the engine right in the power band. It's a great feeling.
