Congrats. Most yards around here want $175 u-pull and 200-250 they pull, just for the 5-speed. The 1200 master cylinder works fine with the B310 slave, but either way it should work.

Also note the early A-engines used non-metiric flywheel bolts, while later cranks use Metric bolts.

1200 flywheel on an A14 or A15.

I didn't take any pictures of the flywheel. Dan Hall made it look very much like the drawing in the tech section from Datsun competetion.

I posted this into the other thread about manual into auto swaps. Decided to bring it here too.

The Aa14/15 motors have slightly larger flywheel bolts.

You may want to drill out the 6 holes in the 1200 flywheel just a bit. .5mm should be enough. 1200 flywheel bolts are 9.45mm across the threads. The A14 flywheel bolts are 9.86mm across the threads.

I had the flywheel bolts shear off when a friend was driving the converted rally car during an autocross. Didn't think an A15 with 1200GX head and SU's could survive WOT without even a flywheel... but it did. This car had a lightened 1200 flywheel on a A15. Seemed like the bolts were a bit tight going in. Had the bolts in a bind. After drilling out the flywheel holes everything bolted back together and worked for 2 more seasons of autocross.

Status report...

Saturday I basically got the whole swap done minus the wiring and clutch plumbing.

Sunday the clutch got setup and wiring done.

Wiring:

2 things had to be done.

Connect the backup lights. This is done by connecting the 2 red wires in the plug in the engine compartment that went to the Auto tranny to the backup switch on the manual.

Jumper across the black with yellow stripe wires. This removes the neutral/park saftey interlock so that you can start the car...

Pedals:

In a left hand drive car you need to get a clutch pedal. I cut down the metal plate on the auto brake pedal to look like a manual pedal. The clutch pedal will need a ~1" dogleg bent into it to move the bottom of the clutch pedal to the left.

I'm not sure if anything will need to be done to the pedals in a RHD car as the reference point, the right side of the car is in the same place... On the LHD cars everything if pushed to the left by the big transmission tunnel.

Rear crossmember:

All you need to do is turn around the rubber mount inside the automatic crossmember. This moves the crossmember forward about an inch and makes it line up with the mounts in the car. I figured this out after I had cut the corners of the crossmember to fit with the whole unit turned around. You will need to grind a clearence notch into the front of the rear crossmember to clear the spedo cable.

Need to find a spedo gear out of a 4 speed 1200 tranny. The B310 must have had higher gear ratios as my spedo is now way off. Before it was "optomistic". Now it just lies. Mileage is off by 5.8% and speed is of by 16.5%.

If the car was used just for autocross the 4 speed would be just fine. I wanted the 5 speed overdrive tranny for nicer high speed crusing.

Seems like the 0 to 30 mph is much faster now. Having the clutch and first gear makes all the difference in the world.

Did lots of driving around today. Lots of fun!

Gary

Yeah that direct in 5th gear 5spd that I got is going to be nice. I tore it all down and that thing was imacculate inside. Siliconed it back together, ready for install.

I know of atleast two more of those trans.

Have fun with your swap.

Is there an issue using an A12 flywheel on an A14? I intend on lightening one for mine. Got pics of your fly wheel?

Mike

When you call Portland, Oregon your home, they do. Left drive models all have hydraulic clutches.
I'm a little surprised that a new 1200 master cylinder was not available, even if it needed to be ordered in.

I don't know that the five speed would be an advantage over the four speed manual here as the five speed is basicly a four speed, plus an overdrive ratio [unless you have the rare direct in fifth version] & it sounds like you will rarely, if ever, get it above third gear.

For the sum of $160.00 I got the 5 speed, driveline, flywheel, clutch parts, and a pair of lower controll arms and radius rods off on a different B310.
nice find, A series five speeds are getting pretty rare and going for a tone more than u paid, not sure how rare in us, but the current price for a A series 5 speed from a wreckers(if u can ever find one in a lifetime) are going for around $1200-1600au,
hope all goes well, and good luck

Would you mind doing a complete write up of the swap project and list of parts for us Auto owners who are dreaming of doing a manual swap down the road???

I'm pretty sure i'm not the only one wh would really appreciate it!

Thanks,
JD

Well, tomorow starts the tranny swap project. I'll be replacing the 3 speed jatco with a 60 series 5 speed out of a B310.

Last Saturday I found a complete B310 wagon with 220,000 miles on it that thay drove into the wrecking yard so I could take parts from it. Kind of bothered me to remove parts from a nice running car. I asked the guy at the wrecking yard why they were not selling the car as a driver. He made some comment that wrecking yards can't sell complete cars any more. This is in Oregon in the US.

For the sum of $160.00 I got the 5 speed, driveline, flywheel, clutch parts, and a pair of lower controll arms and radius rods off on a different B310.

The tranny has made a quick trip to the local transmission shop to have a set of fresh bearings installed. Bearings installed were $375.00

The flywheel made a trip to Dan Hall's automotive for a shave and balance. When Dan started the flywheel weighed in at 22# (10kg). After the shaving the flywheel is 14# (6.35kg). Flywheel shave, balance, and presure plate balance was $90.00.

After calling around and finding that none of the major suppliers had clutch master cylinders for B110's. Ask here yesterday and found out that the B310 clutch master would fit in the hole. Did some calling around and found that one of the local suppliers that is less than 5 minutes away from my house, Thrifty Automotive wanted $77.00 for a clutch master!! Called Halsey automotive, one of the parst distrubutors in the area and they had the B310 clutch master for $11.50. Some difference! Thrifty only wanted 669% more for the same part!!! Just a little markup eh?

The B310 clutch master has the mounting holes rotated about 30 degrees from vertical so I'll have to drill a new pair of bolt holes but that shouldn't be too hard...

So, it looks like all the large and small ducks are lined up for a successfull project. Hope things go as planned and the car is back on the road later this weekend. If I have problems it is a 4 day holiday weekend so I have time to get things sorted out.

I'm really looking forward to having a car that can launch off the line instead of kind of gather speed like it does now with the automatic.

15 years ago I was autocrossing a 1200 with an automatic and it was actually an advange because of the gearing. Almost all the courses could be run in low. That series did not allow drag race starts so the coarses were laid out with either a practice lap or a flying start.

The current series that I'm running has the clock start almost as soon as the car is moving. I figure that I'm spotting every one else 2 seconds or more with the slow launch from the automatic. a 2 second improvement is not insignificant... Should give me more than enough to put that darn nephew back in his place
