I got my head checked (including the sealing of all the valves) and then 'decked' - shaved flat for $50 I believe...maybe a little more.

As a defense mechanism my brain acutally forgets how much I have spent on Datsun related stuff...my psychologist tells me if I were to ever find out how much I have really spent on Datsun I will actually fall into a catatonic state and not awaken until it is 1973 again.

just a few thing you might like to consider when your doing the head gaskit 1. dont tip your carbie upside down when you have it off. 2. use a bit of copper gresse on exhust studs (it makes it easyer to take them off next time) 3.when tensioning the head start in the middle and work your way out from there one at a time and keep swaping sides 4.keep checking all the rods are in the rocker arms.(while you have the head off check the rods by rolling them on a peice of glass if they are not spot on find some that are)5.dont over tighten the rocket cover you may need to panel beat it first to make sure the gasket surface is flat. it is a good idea to get the head skimed it dosent cost much,imagine doing all that work then having to do it all again because you wanted to save a few bucks.hope the info helps. chris

You got it d1t - I've got a 1200, 120Y, Sunny manual the torque settings barely vary between the 3 A series motors.

If you aren't keen on buying one - you should be able to find them in most libraries too!

Hope you like the manual - you'll find it has been text recognised and is thus searchable too!

Unfortunatly there isn't a flange after the collectors, so it appears that it will have to come off anyway. They're a massive one piece design. Thanks mate. I think I'll have to support it somehow from underneath so I don't bend anything further down the exhaust. Does anybody else do this?

It appears to have torque settings listed in there, page 32. Are these the same for all of the A series engines?
Cylinder head bolts - 74Nm
Connecting rod nuts - 37Nm
Flywheel bolts - 88Nm
etc etc

Go to my Links page on the website - if you haven't bought a workshop manual yet - you can download the one I have on the website. I'd recommend buying one though for all of $10 of ebay. They have all the torque setting you'll need. Now you just need to buy a torque wrench...expensive.

Killer1200 - I didn't do that on a 'real' engine - it was just to clean it of rust to show what it was meant to look like. That was a throw away A12 block I used to train myself how to pull apart these engines and put them back together nicely.

hey man If you want to do it on saturday I can come and give you a hand, I've even got a headgasket hanging on the wall for an A-series I dont have. I dont have a manual and would need one for torque settings.
