I have an AU falcon ute and yes the hinges are exposed but the latch is internal.
It uses a similar system to a tilt panel garage door latch.

What about a larger stronger piano type hinge, I'm not to sure of how the 1200 ute looks under the tailgate there, so that may work???
Otherwise I would just look at every different type of ute tailgate that you can and see what they use.

I had a look at BA Falcon hinges and they are still seen from the out side. Do you know what model it might be?
Thanks Scott

Raceace, what do the four link systems look like (any pics?) is it something like the old Torrana bonnet hinges?

Anyone have a good way to relocate the tailgate hinges so the knuckle cant be seen from the rear. And no i dont want to weld up the tail gate.
Cheers Scott
