It is definetly a L series engine. The VIN won't help, it doesn't appear the same as other 72 521's that I have seen with the extra smog stuff. Thanks for the help.

if it's an A series, the engine number shall be on the spark plug side of the block, you will see a flat area on the top of the block in the middle, it will either say A12, A13, A14 or A15, if the distributor is on the carburettor side and there is a hump at the front of the rocker cover that means it is an L series engine, which is an overhead cam design, alternatively the vehicle identification placard shall have an engine number stamped on it.

I am new to datsun's, I just got a 72 521, How can I tell what engine it has in it. I don't think it is an l16. It has a bunch of extra smog stuff. Where can I find any casting #'s.
Any help is appreciated.
