if i ever save the money to cut down a skyline diff(pribably end up using a commodore one with skyline axel) i will be getting it a bit wider than standard as im using spacers to get the wheels looking slightly normal compared to the track on the stanza front end im using

so it depends on what wheels you will be running and stuff like that

guess i should just save up for a r31 diff and get it cut down..

people who have done this what measurement did you use??? just the same width as a standard diff in a sedan??
may someone shed some light

once again thanks a million for the replies

well im with the tech section and the fact that i happen to have a 74 model 120y and it happens to have a h145, so you best make a note of this i your service manual

BACK ON TOPIC, if the 1200 h145 is different to the 120y one, could just be, then all you will need to do is drill 3 or 4 new holes instead on 2
which could give you more choice of where to mount the caliper using the r31 setup
and you might not have to bore the centre of the caliper bracket as 1200s might use a smaller bearing

either way the only thing thats hard about the r31 setup it making a handbrake cable, so if you go and get the brakes from a wrecker be sure to get an intact handbrake cable from an r31 as well then just see if you can modify stuff to fit, and if worst comes to worst..... no handbrake

My 120Y Gregories makes no reference to the actual model of diff, but my factory 120Y book mentions only the H150. The later suplement covers the Warner rear end, but that's not at issue here.

It's possible, I suppose, that someone has used an H145 differential in the 120Y's H150 axle housing as it will bolt right up, but if you believe the factory published material, then the the original differential in the 120Y was the H150.

How does this relate to backing plate flange size? Beats me, but clearly there was something in it.

Where did you get the info about the 1974 120 using the H145? My second son has a '74 model 120Y so now I need to check it out.

Oh yeah, I replaced the rear brakes & a wheel bearing in my 1200 coupe recently & I have a ute axle housing nearby & these two, at least, were quite different.

pretty sure 120ys used both, as i have both a 120y h150 and h145, they are different

i shall go have another look, i dont think that the diff has been fooling me all this time

one has a diff yoke the same as a h165, its the h150
the other has a smaller yoke, h145

Quote:
NOTE: The 1974 B210 uses an H145

tech section seems to be on my side, so are we leaving it to the fact that a 120y h145 is different to a 1200 h145?
i have never seen a 1200 h145 myself as all my 1200s came with BW diffs, so i will have to rely on others info here

so i might change my statement for the moment to " the flange is the same for 120y h145 h150 and all h165s"

dont forget you can use the disc brake rotor off a mitsbishi and the just make a bolt on caliper mount out of some 5mm steel its custom work i Know but if you use the skyline calipers with the mitsubishi rotors it allows for more wheel options

The 120Y used the H150, not the H145.

well then i must have a weird h145, coz i just bolted the backing plate i took off my h165 to the h145

so i would say they arent different at all, unless a 120y h145 is different to a 1200 h145

my information is about 15 minutes old

but please do share your information so we can get to the right conclusion

Au' contraire.
The backing plate flange is NOT the same. Not even close. I can't speak for the H150 but the H145 & H165 backing plate flanges are quite different.

now as for the question you asked

the r31 setup needs
-custom handbrake cable
-2 different holes drilled in the caliper bracket(2 already line up)
-the centre of the caliper bracket should be bored out to allow removal of the axel without taking the brakes with you
-a flexable brake line to be fitted to either side of the diff to go from the diff housing to the caliper
-some spacer shim washer things should be used to centre the caliper over the disc

pretty sure thats about all,but i think with either setup you may have clearance issues in a sedan as the caliper comes close to the chassis rail(havnt got this far in my conversion yet)

also with both you will need new wheel bearings as the old ones need to be removed to get the drum backing plate off
