yes great to see.we have a junior development group at kyneton car club which teaches these young kids how to drive.now they are setting up a motorkana pad for them which will be finished at the end of the year!and they must race in these before they join the big boys on the main track.its great to see them improve there ability and other clubs need to adopt this..as they say its small clubs that gives them a stepping stone to who knows!!!

Yeah that's one of the main reasons I'm keen on the boy getting into motorsport early is so by the time he's on his Ps driving fast and 'drifting' is old hat to him by then, plus the speeds on race tracks are many times quicker than public roads, so the thrill of speed isn't there either.....that's the plan anyway. 18yr olds are always going to take crazy risks - all we can do as parents is prepare them to survive those risks. (It's not like they are going to listen to us)

(mind you I wish my parents took me khana-ing)

EDIT: The other great thing I think the kids get from motorsport is to learn to respect the car, the road and the speed. Every driver briefing drums it into them...plus on this weekend there were a bunch of WRX club guys there - who weren't even trying to get around the car quick just digging massive holes bouncing of the limters in their STis. Even the boy thought they were a bunch of wankers, no respect....good to see him learn early also that most WRX drivers are wankers....useful skill.

Yes,i too love the idea of the young ones getting a start(as i did 100 years ago)on the dirt or grass rather than being thrown to the wolves with all the other experts from day one. There are limited opportunities in australia, but Queensland do have some i know and have a bit to do with.Short Circuit Motor Sport Association promote juniors at both dirt and bitumen sprint level along with autocross/khana etc.So if there are any parents out there wondering how to? have a look at the association web site as above or shoot me a pm with a phone number an i'll give you a call.I believe it's a really cheap early insurance cover for the young ones to keep out of trouble on the roads and who knows where they might end up in the years ahead

Having access to sombody to take you to these sort of events is not easy to come by. Your young fella is very lucky.
I was lucky enough to be part of a scout troop that regulary participated in these sort of events, but it all fell in a heap when insurances went through the roof a few years back. The Scout association is only just now getting the events back on track (dont mind the pun).

So much fun, so many chances to learn, in such a safe and regualted enviroment.

Best thing ever invented.

A wet grassy padock with some cardboard boxes for markers is probably the best place to get some ab-initio training in vehicle control. Some place to go nutso at low speeds with plenty of slide & drift, but nobody to crash into.

If you can master that properly, then one is well on the way to being competent behind the wheel.

Great to hear there are bunch of young guys learning how to drive fast on the track, and not waiting to drive like complete idiots on their "Ps".

Nice work guys!
