Dads clubbie has a plarque on the dash that says it hasnt passed the frontal impact test, I think there is an exemption for low production run vehicles or something.

About engine choice and regulations, I had an idea a while ago. Old clubbies pop up every now and again. About 6 months ago a mate and I were going to put a 4agze and wizzbang suspension into a 70's rolling chassis that we found for $3000, but it had gone.

So opportunities are out there

Cheers

I think its a little more restricted in NSW... It would prib come under Hot Rod rules and regs for special dispensation.

I have been to a couple of meetings with the locost club (the car you build from the book 'build your own sportscar for ₤250 or less) and its frustrating to say the least of our fruitless toils of trying to get some leeway from our licensing bodies. It's really irritating to see what the hotrod guys are allowed to do on cars up to 90 years old. we are essentially dealing with cars that are driven probably 5% of the time of most ordinary family sedans. But we have to comply with the latest euro emissions specs and demonstrate chassis rigidity that would have made jack brabham happy in the 1970s. what we need is something to separate home builders from commercial entities under this ICV regulation and a different subset of rules allowing use of cheaper / common engines essentially in cars that are safer in regards of braking and handling than most cars on the market today. Yes it's a shame as I had a sweet mild A15 sitting in a friends shed earmarked for just such a project, But i've since given up hope and decided to find a nice morris minor for it as I've always wanted one and now even more that Ive found datto engines are such an easy conversion

Mate just built a Birkin
He has the plaque on the dash as a disclaimer that the car hasn't met ADR crash tests too

I'd like to build one eventually myself
But I want a track only rear engine setup

Later this year I am removing the A15 and 5speed and installing a SR16, that should make it go a bit better. I will be selling the motor and gearbox if your interested.

My105.com Motorsport Classifieds

A mate of a mate had built one and got a round the crash test and most of the AP stuff somehow

The department of road transport made him put a small plaque on the dash in front of the passenger which basically stated that if you get in this car, you are taking your life in your hands and if you crash/burn too bad.

It's SR20DET powered and puts out 240kW at the moment.

Adam, I could probably hook you up with the fella if you have questions or maybe want to go for a spin (It's off the road at the moment for a few 'enhancements' though).

yep and a self built road car would nee to comply with ADR 10 which is frontal impact assessment. Which means you need to crash test it or prove that it would hold in a crash. Westfield have done this already and then you need to meet pollution laws which means even an SR wont do. Yes you do need to have a late model car engine...Ive heard it needs to be in a current production car. I wouldnt bother for the road...I would bould a nice cheap one for track work making it as light as possible..ie H145 rear, 5spd 60a series gearbox, A15 twin webers. Visit the Locost site. You will find members there still pay big $$$ for a clubbie.
