loose the points dizzy! then you won't have to fool with anything in the dizzy ever again. You'll probably gain a bit of performance too...

While were asking stupid questions....what would happen if you ran a GT40 through the ballast resistor? No difference....or.....?

Make sure the ignition controller can handle the extra current. The Ballast Resistor limits current flow -- not just to the coil but through the switch too (points or electronic unit).

Boys you've done it again. cheers thanks for the info, not only will this mean less old parts that can break down but help tidy up my engine bay

Actually, the ballast resistor limits the CURRENT flowing through the COIL to stop it burning out.

and also to ensure that only 6V enters the +ve terminal of a 6V coil.

hence why removal of it is required for a installing a 12V coil (as a 12V coil won't work well on 6V)

it is simply a piece of nichrome wire behind the ceramic covering. nichrome has a high resistivity (for a metal).

heat soak wouldnt be an issue as the nichrome wire uses the 6V it drops across it to heat the wire up. plus it is in the engine bay where the temperature is never really cold...

goto your parts shop and ask for a ignition coil to suit a non balast resist car. Wire it up as the old one is but join the 2 wires together that would normaly go into the balast resister.

from my understanding bigd
electronic dissy= "poof" ballast resistor gone
because it doesnt have points anymore

Correct - GT40R must use an external resistor.

Get an ignition coil with a built in ballast resistor and get rid of the ugly one. Easy!

It is required unless you have an ignition coil with a built in ballast resistor such as a Bosch GT40.

Dont you mean the GT40-R?
(I recently got these 2 mixed up)
