Isn,t there a timing chain tensioner driven by oil pressure? There was in the 1200 I pulled apart. I would think that the dist is worn, just take off your rota button and try to move the shaft sideways if it moves to much it,s stuffed! Most of these motors are getting old and who looks at dissy,s?? You rebuild your motor an drop the same old 200000K + dissy back in the hole!! beg, borrow someone else dissy (or get your,s checked) an try that.. Cheers & good luck

we replaced the metal pully with a mini pully for damping.
thats the reason for the harmonic balancer.
think the chain faulty though as it only does it off acceleration.
thanks guys

checked the crank and rotor position,
crank moves aboit 10mm before rotor starts to move ,could be a stretched chain i think
thanks guys

a streched and about to fail chain can cause erratic timing. to check pull dist cap off turn the crankshaft with a wrench on the pulley clockwise then note position of dist rotor now while whatching rotor turn crank shaft backwords the rotor should move instantly if not how much you move the crank before rotor turns that will show you if chain is good or stretched

Most american engines run the timing marks on the harmonic balancer with no problems. A-series engines don't have harmonic balancers, but a simple all-metal pulley.

If the timing is jumping around, chances are it is in the distributor:
* worn distributor shaft bushing
* worn distributor cam lobe
* loose points plate
* Broken advance mechanism
* bad contact points (partially burnt or not adjusted to the right distance)

Harmonic balancer's jump back and foward to balance the engine. If your timing mark is on the balancer it wont be stable at all.
