it was petrol whith a bit of DISEL!!!

Funny thing is, the other day I was at a zorst place. The guy who owned it, arrived in his 4.2 petrol Land Cruiser, and it was smoking badly, and not very responsive with the throttle. He phoned the one employee who took it to be filled up, it had about a 1/4 tank of petrol left, and the guy said it was filled up with diesel as he thought that was what it used.

Whats amazing was that it ran at all, just very smokey. Those damn Toyota motors are amazing in that way...

just don't do the diesel in a gas engine - very bad!

Back in the day when gas nozzles were all the same size (at least in the US) you could mix them up easily.

I had to drain a few customers tanks of diesel when they came into the shop.

oil left inside the exhaust system from when the engine was in a bad state.

I ask a buddy of mine about this. He said you should advance your timing to get the moter to backfire through the exhaust to burn it clear. (Just a thought)

perhaps a rear main oil leak onto the exhaust??

My UTE also had a bad smell when the rear crank seal started leaking, it was a result of oil dripping on the branch manifold.

No seriously, you say you've rebuilt the engine, and it's only run 1500km, it might be that there is still a lot of oil left inside the exhaust system from when the engine was in a bad state. It's gone and gathered in the cans and pipes, so it will probably take some time for all of that to burn away. Taking it on a long trip, and giving it a couple of long extended runs at full throttle might heat the zorst up enough to get it burned clean quicker.

When you park the car, the fumes aren't being blown out of the zorst, and that oil get time to cook in the hot system, so it will expel lots of pungent oil fumes when parked in the garage. That will explain the "old-oil-in-clothes" smell...

Its the two stroke oily smell right?

yeah beattie, Ill go with you. perhaps a rear main oil leak onto the exhaust??

or perhaps your are buring a heap of oil past the rings?

If the motor is rebuilt, how long ago? Sometimes new rebuilt motors will burn a little oil till they bed in.
